September 2017 Cover illustrated by Peter Diamond

VIENNA, 1 September 2017 – In September, design is the word on the street as Vienna Design Week, Vienna Contemporary, and MQ Vienna Fashion Week dominate the city, and METROPOLE guides you through this month where form and function meet.

The cover story (p 18) “A Design State of Mind” explores Viennese design, where a unique combination of politics, history, and geography have created what Lilli Hollein, co-founder and director of Vienna Design Week, describes as a ‘playful attitude and laid back style.’

The foldable cover design reveals a finished Thonet chair, and is illustrated by Peter Diamond.

In this issue you will find:

“The Headache with the Face Veils” p 11, Op-Ed, Layla Huriya
(the author’s name has been changed)
The Burqa and Niqab are hotly debated in European politics, and this October, a ban will be implemented in Austria. However, their actual origin and history remains misunderstood by many. Is a ban really worth it when it will only alienate others?

“Vienna Red Listed” p 40, Special Report, Susanne Gottlieb
The planned high-rise project on Heumarkt threatens the UNESCO World Heritage status of Vienna, with the UN subsidiary fearing it will change the city’s historical character. While there are concerns that the proposed building will change the first district’s skyline, whether Vienna needs UNESCO status to continue to attract tourists is debatable. The value of restructuring the Heumarkt may well be worth being on the red list.

Quotes from the article:
“The city took on a responsibility when it originally proposed the inner city to the World Heritage committee. It has to set the boundaries.” Gabriele Eschig, general secretary of UNESCO in Austria

“Vienna has the asset of being a modern, safe and open city. Being a world heritage site is nice, but not necessary.” Markus Grießer, The Tourism Head at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce

“Alpine Boardwalk” p 76, Travel, Benjamin Wolf
Carinthia’s Wörthersee is the waterfront escape that Austrians keep coming back to the perfect Alpine beach resort in the landlocked country of Austria. Just right for a weekend getaway, this is the chance to extend your summer just a little longer.

Quotes from the issue:
“I think I will be quite sad too when the last old trams are taken out of service. The are part of the city and how it’s viewed internationally. When you see a picture of Vienna, there’s usually a tram in it.” Johanna Griesmayr, Wiener Linien Spokesperson p 8, Op-ed, Bye-Bye Bim!
By Alexei Korolyov

“The role of design is not to wipe out the old and make things prettier. It is to understand the context and improve the process throughout.”
Lilli Hollein, co-founder and director of Vienna Design Week
p 21, Cover Story, ‘A Design State of Mind’ by Aline Lara Rezende
