Press release from: Texas Deer Association

SAN ANTONIO — Seeking instruction on how to produce 200-inch whitetail bucks, more than 150 ranch owners and whitetail deer enthusiasts from across Texas gathered at the scenic Mustang Creek Ranch in Salado, Texas, for the Third Annual Whitetail Workshop. The Texas Deer Association (TDA) was a principal sponsor for the event which featured renowned whitetail expert and TDA-co-founder Dr. James C. Kroll who delivered an informative curriculum on whitetail deer.

For the past three years, the workshop at Mustang Creek Ranch — owned and operated by TDA member Bill Grace — has provided in-depth instruction on the raising and caring for whitetail deer and on the breeding of whitetail deer as a business. The whitetail deer breeding industry contributes more than $650 million to the Texas economy, as reported by a 2007 Texas A&M University study, and is one of the fastest growing industries in rural America.

“The Whitetail Workshop was another great success this year,” says Karl Kinsel, executive director of the Texas Deer Association. “Dr. Kroll, Bill Grace and the entire Mustang Creek Ranch staff presented invaluable information and an extremely inspirational seminar for hunters, breeders and whitetail enthusiasts. Mustang Creek Ranch features some of the finest, high-quality whitetail bucks in Texas and the Grace family is always generous in sharing their knowledge with other established breeders and newcomers to the industry.”

The Whitetail Workshop curriculum included the design of breeding and handling facilities; forage management; importance of maintaining accurate records for proper herd management; managing and daily care of fawns, artificial insemination techniques, whitetail behavior and much more.

Mustang Creek Ranch, located in historic Salado, features 2,500 acres of rolling terrain, scenic pastures and the beautiful Mustang Creek — all of which have been under a careful game management plan for more than 16 years with Dr. Kroll as the head biologist and advisor.

The TDA is the only non-profit organization solely committed to improving the quality of Texas deer herds through improved habitat, modern harvest strategies and genetic improvement. As a part of its public education efforts, the TDA publishes a full-color bimonthly magazine, Tracks, which updates TDA members on current legislative news, deer genetics and game management issues. The TDA also hosts an annual convention and trade show featuring a live deer sales, auction, golf tournament and other events.
