ezyZip Adds Over 100 Archive Formats, Bringing Support to 250+ Across Browser, Windows and Mac

After a soft launch through July, all of it is live in the browser and in the desktop apps for Windows and macOS.

TALLINN, Estonia (August 2026) - WebbyAppy OU, the company behind the browser-based archive manager ezyZip, has completed the largest format expansion in the product's history. Seventeen new decoder engines add over 100 archive formats, taking total support past 250, and every one of them is now available in all three places ezyZip runs: the free web app, and the ezyZip Pro desktop apps for Windows and macOS.

The new formats went out quietly through July while the desktop builds caught up with the web app. They are now fully live on both. Unlike the previous release, nothing here is beta. Every format ships with a passing extraction test against a real archive file, and most are verified byte for byte against the output of the format's original decoder.

One Hundred New Formats, Every One Tested

The sweep is deliberately historical. It covers the archive formats of the DOS, CP/M, Amiga, classic Macintosh, Apple II, RISC OS and Commodore eras, the formats that carried most of personal computing's first two decades and that almost no modern tool will open. Alongside them come Mac StuffIt in every generation, Apple's own Apple Archive, the high-ratio archiver FreeArc, WARC web crawls, and eleven separate families of Windows installer. In all, the release adds 115 new routes to the format registry.

Support was proved before it was announced. A test suite runs each format against real archive files collected from the wild, currently 292 passing cases with eleven documented exclusions and no failures, and a second suite drives every format group through the application's own interface to confirm the files actually land on disk. Where a native version of the original decoder exists, its output is used as the reference, which is what makes the byte-for-byte claim literal rather than promotional.

Vintage Archives, Decoded Properly

A stubborn group of DOS-era archive formats has no published specification and no modern decoder. The only software that reads them correctly is the original DOS tool from the 1990s, long since abandoned by its author and, in many cases, missing from the internet altogether. Rather than approximate those formats and risk quietly mangling the contents, ezyZip bundles a built-in emulator and runs the authentic extraction tool for each one. Twenty-six formats are decoded this way, including UHARC, LIMIT, HAP, BOA, ARQ and AIN, producing output byte for byte identical to what the original tool produced thirty years ago. Everything happens locally, inside the app. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is installed on the user's system. To WebbyAppy's knowledge, no mainstream extraction tool does this.

Opening Windows Installers

Installers are archives too. This release opens the eleven most common Windows installer families, including Inno Setup, InstallShield, WiX Burn, Squirrel, Advanced Installer, Clickteam, Wise, Setup Factory and CreateInstall, so the files inside a setup.exe can be listed and extracted without running it. The app works out which installer built the file by inspecting its structure, then hands it to the matching decoder. Multi-part installers are handled as a single archive: pick the setup file, and companion .bin data files or data1.cab volume sets are found automatically. Password-protected Inno Setup installers are supported.

It Knows What a File Is Without the Extension

Historical archives rarely arrive with tidy filenames. A DOS archive that has passed through four decades of floppy disks, bulletin boards and backup drives might be called .PKG, .LZ or .DAT, or carry no extension at all. ezyZip now identifies every file by reading its contents, matching the structural signature that the format's author actually wrote into it, rather than trusting the name. If the extension is wrong, generic or missing, the file still opens in the correct decoder. Files that merely look like an archive are left alone.

Classic Mac Archives Come Home

Mac formats are now first-class citizens rather than a gap in the list. StuffIt, StuffIt 5, StuffIt X, self-extracting .sea archives and BinHex and MacBinary wrappers all open natively on Windows as well as on macOS, including password-protected StuffIt archives. Apple's modern Apple Archive format and Apple Encrypted Archive are supported too, in both passphrase and symmetric key modes.

Web Crawls That Extract as Real Files

A WARC file is a raw record of a web crawl, with each page stored inside its full HTTP headers. ezyZip unwraps them, so a crawl extracts as real, openable files: HTML pages, images, stylesheets and scripts, rather than raw protocol records. Pages saved without a file extension are given one so they open in a browser.

The Same Formats Everywhere

Until this release, the ezyZip web app and the ezyZip Pro desktop app supported different lists of formats, and the desktop app was the shorter of the two. That gap is closed. The desktop app now matches the web app format for format, so a file that opens in the browser opens in the desktop app and the other way round. The privacy model is unchanged in every version. Archives are processed on the user's own machine and are never uploaded to a server.

"Some of these archives have been sitting in shoeboxes and on dead hard drives for thirty years with nothing left alive that could open them," said Ezriah Zippernowsky, spokesmonkey for ezyZip. "So we did the only sensible thing and kept the original 1990s tools in a jar, rather like a very old banana that somehow still works. Drop the file in, the ancient tool wakes up inside the app, and out come your files exactly as they went in. No uploading, no installing, no hunting the internet for a program that stopped being sold before you were born. I have been in this jungle a long time, and I have never been so delighted to be handed a UHARC file."

All of the new formats are live now in the free web app at https://www.ezyzip.com and in the ezyZip Pro desktop app for Windows and macOS, available at https://ezyzip.pro. The interface is available in 15 languages and detects the browser language automatically. Support for the new formats is extraction only. ezyZip reads these archives; it does not create them.
