KANSAS - What transforms a tragedy into a catastrophe? According to retired U.S. Army First Sergeant Daryl S. Roddy, the answer lies not simply in the disaster itself, but in the failures that occur long before lives are lost.

In his new book, After Action: Lessons from the Worst Disasters in History, Roddy takes readers beyond the headlines to examine the leadership breakdowns, ignored warnings, logistical failures, and institutional mistakes that turned crises into some of history's deadliest catastrophes.

Drawing on more than 27 years of military service-including combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan-Roddy applies the principles of leadership, emergency management, and after-action reviews to disasters spanning centuries. Through direct analysis and historical investigation, he challenges readers to reconsider what truly causes catastrophic failure.

"Disasters don't kill systems-systems fail first, and then people die," Roddy writes.

More than a history book, After Action serves as a powerful examination of crisis management and human decision-making. By analyzing where communication collapsed, preparation failed, and leaders made critical mistakes, Roddy provides lessons that remain relevant for military professionals, emergency managers, government officials, business leaders, and anyone responsible for guiding others through uncertainty.

Roddy's extensive background includes decades of experience in logistics, leadership, and emergency operations. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, he continued working in emergency management while pursuing advanced studies in Emergency and Disaster Management. His combination of real-world experience and academic study gives the book a unique perspective grounded in both practice and theory.

"History repeatedly shows us that catastrophes are rarely unavoidable," Roddy says. "Most disasters leave warning signs. The challenge is whether leaders are willing to recognize them and act before it's too late."

In After Action: Lessons from the Worst Disasters in History, readers will discover:

* Historical disasters analyzed through a modern leadership lens
* Lessons in logistics, crisis management, and organizational failure
* Insights into why institutions often repeat the same mistakes
* Practical takeaways for today's leaders and emergency planners
* A candid, no-nonsense perspective shaped by decades of military service
