The northern Italian Renaissance city of Ferrara is increasingly becoming a hotspot for art lovers. Following the huge success with both the public and critics of the Chagall exhibition, which drew more than 140,000 visitors, the Palazzo dei Diamanti is presenting another exhibition of international stature through July 19, 2026: "Andy Warhol. Ladies and Gentlemen" brings together more than 150 works from major international museums and private collections.

As early as the 1970s, Ferrara attracted international attention with bold exhibition projects. The fact that Andy Warhol chose to present his legendary "Ladies and Gentlemen" series in 1975-76 at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara was considered a cultural-political coup and underscored the city's ambition to combine its historic setting with international contemporary art. Fifty years after the legendary Warhol exhibition, the city once again reaffirms its role as a major venue for international contemporary art with the current Warhol show. Conceived by the Fondazione Ferrara Arte and the Gallerie d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Ferrara in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Museum, the exhibition brings together acrylic paintings, drawings, silkscreen prints, and Polaroids that not only atmospherically revive the historic presentation of that time but also provide a comprehensive insight into Warhol's revolutionary portraiture.

How Andy Warhol Reinvented the Portrait

The exhibition also highlights just how astonishingly relevant Andy Warhol remains to this day. Decades before the age of social media, the Pop Art pioneer was already exploring themes such as media staging, artificial self-representation, gender identity, and the manipulation of images. The focus is on the famous "Ladies and Gentlemen" series, in which Warhol gave Black and Latin American drag queens a platform for the first time, thereby placing people outside the mainstream of social visibility at the center of his art. The exhibition is complemented by iconic portraits and self-portraits from the 1960s to the 1980s--from the Marilyn series to Mick Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Grace Jones, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Film footage, photographs, and numerous works--some on display in Italy for the first time--also illustrate just how radically Warhol reinvented the classical portrait.

From Monet to Van Gogh to Kandinsky

While "Andy Warhol. Ladies and Gentlemen" captivates an international audience, the Palazzo dei Diamanti is already preparing behind the scenes for its next major exhibition. "From Monet to Van Gogh to Kandinsky. New Perspectives on Nature and Modernism" is the title of the exhibition, which will be on view at the Palazzo dei Diamanti from September 19, 2026, to January 10, 2027. It traces how European painting between the late 19th and early 20th centuries evolved within a few decades from direct observation of nature to the dissolution of representational art.

The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara, housed in the Palazzo dei Diamanti, also contributes to Ferrara's cultural profile. In the historic state rooms of the Renaissance palace, visitors can experience the development of Ferrara's painting between the 13th and 18th centuries--with works by major Italian artists such as Andrea Mantegna, Carpaccio, Dosso Dossi, and Guercino. Among the highlights is the monumental Costabili Polyptych by Garofalo and Dosso Dossi, one of the region's most significant Renaissance works.

Cinema and Grand Fresco Cycles

With the new Museo Michelangelo Antonioni, Ferrara is now dedicating a cultural space to one of the most significant directors of European auteur cinema in the renovated rooms of the former Pavilion for Contemporary Art in Palazzo Massari. There, visitors can immerse themselves deeply in the creative and intellectual world of Michelangelo Antonioni. The museum is based on an extensive archive containing more than 47,000 documents and objects from the director's personal estate--including films, original screenplays, photographs, drawings, paintings, books, records, and correspondence with influential cultural figures of the 20th century.

On the edge of the historic center stands Palazzo Schifanoia, one of Ferrara's most fascinating Renaissance palaces. It was built in the 14th century as a pleasure palace and retreat for the Este dukes. Today, the palazzo houses the Museo Schifanoia, featuring significant works of Ferrara Renaissance art. The absolute highlight is the famous "Salone dei Mesi," one of the most impressive secular fresco cycles of the Italian Renaissance, featuring astrological, mythological, and courtly depictions. A modern museum app with augmented reality elements offers visitors a vivid glimpse into the world of the Este family and Renaissance culture.
