Culinary fall in Ferrara and the Po Delta region: "Renaissance on the table"

Ferrara, Comacchio and the Po Delta invite you to make very special gastronomic discoveries in the fall. In addition to the eel festival and street food festival, the Renaissance banquets in Comacchio are a highlight where top chefs send their guests on a culinary journey through time.

When autumn arrives, it gets quiet on the extensive beaches of Comacchio, the "secret capital" of the Po Delta region. Culinary delights are all the more colorful. Pumpkins are used to make the delicious cappellacci, a popular local pastry specialty. After a week-long break to conserve fish stocks, the fishermen of Porto Garibaldi are now taking their boats out again. The fresh fish is sold directly on the quay of the canal port, at the fish market at auctions or from local fishmongers. In the restaurants, you can once again indulge in "Risotti alla Pescatora" and other highlights of regional seasonal cuisine. Comacchio invites you to the "Sagra dell 'Anguilla", the eel festival, while Ferrara, the capital of the province, celebrates the Ferrara Food Festival.

Michelin stars visit the fish factory

Pastry rolls with sturgeon and savoy cabbage, tortelli with mallard duck filling, chicken breast with almonds and bacon, served with a citrus sauce and apple compote, sour cherry tartlets with gold dust - these are the culinary creations that Michelin-starred chef Igles Corelli will be treating his guests to at the Renaissance banquet in the Po Delta town of Comacchio. The banquet on September 26 is the opening event in a series of culinary events with which the Renaissance city of Ferrara and the Po Delta are celebrating their cultural heritage and the special features of their landscape this fall. Two anniversaries are the reason for this: the 30th anniversary of the recognition of Ferrara's Renaissance old town as a UNESCO cultural heritage site and the tenth anniversary of the Po Delta being awarded the title "UNESCO Biosphere Reserve".

The venue for the stylish "Banchetti Rinascimentali" (Renaissance banquets) is the Manifattura dei Marinati, the historic fish cannery in Comacchio. At each of the three banquets, a top chef will present his culinary ideas on the theme of the Renaissance in Ferrara and the Po Delta region. Igles Corelli, grand master of Italian gastronomy, has already earned a total of five Michelin stars in several restaurants. With his guest appearance at the "Banchetti Rinascimentali", he pays homage to the spirit of the Renaissance with his choice of dishes and ingredients. At the same time, the chef adds a modern touch to all his creations with his signature style.

On October 3, the stage belongs to Simone Finetti, a top chef from Ferrara. Finetti draws his inspiration for Renaissance cuisine from Cristoforo da Messisbugo, who was a steward in the service of the Este dukes and wrote the first Renaissance cookbook around 500 years ago. Finetti's menu pays homage to the art of conviviality. The sequence of dishes culminates in a dessert that uses the art of cooking to recreate a walk through the Po Delta landscape. Guests can look forward to a composition of eel foie gras, wild fruit and chocolate.

Delta cuisine: sea meets land

Third in the line-up is Michelin-starred chef Giacomo Devoto, who will host the finale of "Banchetti Rinascimentali" on October 10. Devoto invites you on a culinary journey inspired by the flavors of the Renaissance, but using modern techniques and an expanded range of ingredients. His ambition is to give the dishes a contemporary sophistication. Even the opening of his menu - squid stuffed with capon - promises to give the palate a stimulating dialog between the sea and the hinterland.

Street food and haute cuisine in Ferrara

If you enjoy culinary discoveries in a lively urban setting, the Ferrara Food Festival from October 31 to November 2 is the place to be. The festival kicks off on the evening of October 30 with a gala dinner featuring dishes inspired by the Renaissance, for which interested gourmets can purchase tickets online. Celebrity chef Carlo Cracco and his team will be preparing recipes from the historical cookbook of Cristoforo da Messisbugo. The event will be accompanied by ladies and cavaliers dancing in historical costumes to Renaissance melodies. They lead the guests along the Via Coperta, the historic passageway that connects Castello d'Este with the magnificent Hall of Honor of the city residence. This is exactly the place where the ducal Este family once held their banquets. If you can get hold of a ticket, you can look forward to a magical night of art, history and unique haute cuisine.
