The Juju of Akodessawa: How an Encounter in Togo Changed the Understanding of Reality
The Juju of Akodessawa: How an Encounter in Togo Changed the Understanding of RealityPolitical unrest, bomb threats, natural forces, and an emergency landing in China - why the world of Voodoo may reach deeper than Western rationality is willing to accept
Lomé / Amman / Angkor / Shanghai. In the Western world, Voodoo, Jujus, and spiritual practices are often quickly dismissed as superstition, folklore, or cultural exoticism. But what happens when events begin to unfold in ways that are difficult to explain rationally? What if experiences emerge that challenge one's entire understanding of reality?
For the author, the year 2005 became exactly such an experience. A journey to West Africa evolved into an intense personal confrontation with events that still raise questions today - questions about forces and connections that may not be fully understood through Western rationality alone.
On February 3, 2005, the author came into close contact with the world of Voodoo for the first time at the famous Akodessawa Fetish Market in Lomé, Togo. During a ceremony, he was introduced to a so-called travel Juju, accompanied by a clear and unsettling message: whoever treated it with respect would receive protection and support; whoever underestimated it would risk things turning against them.
For someone shaped by a Western mindset, such statements initially seem strange, perhaps even irrational. Yet this is precisely where one of the fundamental differences between Western thinking and many traditional African worldviews becomes visible. While the West tends to explain reality primarily through science and materialism, many other cultures have, for centuries, embraced the belief that there are dimensions of existence beyond rational analysis.
What first appeared to be a fascinating cultural encounter took on a disturbing new meaning only days later. Just two days after the Voodoo ceremony, on February 5, a series of strange events began that turned travel itself into a challenge. On that day, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, the long-time president of Togo, died.
The country descended into political crisis. A coup attempt, state of emergency, closed borders, and disrupted electricity and telephone connections quickly created chaos. Violence in the streets intensified the situation further. Foreigners suddenly found themselves trapped in a highly dangerous environment.
The evacuation ultimately succeeded only through a secret cloak-and-dagger operation. The departure took place from an unlit airport, and the boarding process unfolded under extreme tension and in complete haste. Looking back, this moment marked the beginning of a chain of events in which the Juju of Akodessawa became an increasingly powerful inner reference point for the author - not as superstition, but as a serious reminder that human beings may not fully understand all the forces influencing their lives.
Only around ten days later, another extreme situation followed in Amman, Jordan. In the middle of the night, the author was evacuated from his hotel due to a bomb threat. The night had to be spent outdoors, surrounded by uncertainty, fear, and the question of whether further danger was imminent. Once again, there was the unsettling feeling that events were unfolding in an almost uncanny sequence.
In August 2005, another dramatic incident occurred at the entrance of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. A collapsing jungle giant missed the author by only a few centimeters. Within seconds, a place of spiritual calm transformed into a life-threatening situation. For many, it would simply be called coincidence. Yet the accumulation of such events increasingly raised the question of whether connections might exist between people, places, energies, and events that science struggles to explain.
Then, in October 2005, during a flight in Shanghai, China, a technical malfunction occurred shortly after takeoff. The aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing. The situation became even more distressing because the announcements on board were not understood. Panic spread among passengers while every minute in the air became a psychological ordeal. After around thirty tense minutes, the aircraft landed safely.
With the distance of two decades, these experiences no longer appear as isolated extraordinary coincidences. Instead, they converge into a deeper question: could there be forces and dimensions of reality that exist beyond purely materialistic explanations?
In this context, the Juju from the Akodessawa Market does not represent primitive folklore, but rather an ancient spiritual tradition still deeply rooted in many parts of Africa today. While Western societies often instinctively reject metaphysical phenomena, traditional cultures tend to maintain a far more open relationship with energies, spiritual forces, and unseen connections.
Metaphysical experiences are difficult to measure or explain scientifically. Yet the limits of scientific explanation do not automatically prove the nonexistence of a phenomenon. Across the world, many cultures have accepted for centuries that realities may exist beyond what is immediately visible.
For the author, the travel Juju therefore became not a symbol of superstition, but a reminder of humility toward the unknown. Especially in an era when the modern world increasingly realizes how little it truly controls despite all technological progress, this realization feels more relevant than ever.
The power of things and events we do not fully understand should never be underestimated.
The travel Juju thus stands as a symbol of the possibility that behind Voodoo, spiritual traditions, and metaphysical experiences, there may be far more than the Western world has long been willing to acknowledge.
