Supporting African Dreams: Alexander Sarlay's Commitment to Microfinance
Axams / AUSTRIA - International marketing strategist, market researcher, and Africa specialist Alexander Sarlay has been actively supporting entrepreneurs, small-scale farmers, family businesses, and social projects in Africa and other developing regions for years through the global microfinance platform Kiva. With more than 353 microloans granted and a total lending volume exceeding USD 8,525, Sarlay ranks among the most dedicated supporters within the international Kiva network. His commitment is significantly above the average Kiva lender, who contributes approximately USD 393 on average.Particularly remarkable is his strong focus on Africa. A large portion of his microloans has been directed to countries such as Mali, Kenya, Togo, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Through this, Alexander Sarlay specifically supports regions with which he has maintained professional and personal ties for decades. His work as a Business Development Manager and marketing strategist specializing in Sub-Saharan Africa is also reflected in his social engagement.
An important part of this commitment is the Kiva lending team "African Dream," which he supports and which has been active since June 2015. The team focuses particularly on microfinance for women, agriculture, education, trade, and food supply in Africa. Together, the team has already provided around USD 7,000 through more than 280 loans. Especially noteworthy is the high percentage of women-supported projects, accounting for approximately 78 percent of all financed loans. The main focus countries include Mali, Togo, Uganda, and Kenya.
The strongest sectors within the team are agriculture, food supply, retail, clothing, services, and education. Through this approach, "African Dream" maintains a clear focus on sustainable development, food security, and the economic independence of local communities.
"Microloans can change lives. Often, small amounts are enough to help people build a business, develop agriculture, or support their families," explains Alexander Sarlay. This is precisely the philosophy behind Kiva, the international organization that enables private individuals to directly support entrepreneurs worldwide through microfinance.
According to current lending statistics, Alexander Sarlay has already contributed to improving the lives of approximately 361 people. Particularly notable is his strong focus on empowering women: in the past year alone, he helped 24 women build a more independent economic future.
Among the supported projects are:
Poultry farming in Madagascar
Agricultural projects in Mali
Food trading in Rwanda
Solar technology in Côte d'Ivoire
Water and energy projects in Africa
Small businesses in trade, food, and services
The range of supported activities extends from agriculture, education, and clean energy to water projects and women-led businesses. Sustainable and socially responsible business models that promote local value creation and economic independence are especially well represented.
Through Kiva's "relending" principle, every repaid loan creates additional impact. From an original deposit of USD 977.40, Sarlay has already generated a social impact of more than USD 8,330.
Alexander Sarlay sees microfinance not only as social support, but also as an important component of sustainable economic development:
"Many people in Africa have enormous potential but lack access to traditional banking systems. Microloans create opportunities, dignity, and economic independence."
In addition to his international business development activities, Sarlay is deeply involved in future-oriented economic models, sustainable development, wellness projects, and innovative concepts connecting Europe, Mauritius, and Africa.
