BAA has increased passenger safety and reduced noise nuisance at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal Four.

BAA is currently fitting Terminal Four’s fleet of electric vehicles, such as passenger transport and luggage carriers, with bbs-tek, white sound movement alarms. The technology was initially trialled at Stansted Airport and following its phenomenal success, BAA decided to extend it to Heathrow.

The bbs-tek alarms pioneered by and unique to Brigade Electronics, are a safer and more effective alternative to the irritating, shrill noise of a traditional tonal reversing vehicle alarm. The complex, broad band frequency of a bbs-tek alarm emits a “ssh ssh” sound, which can only be heard in the danger zone and dissipates rapidly.

The concentrated sound, or ‘white noise’, is both directional and easily located, making it safer for pedestrians to move to safety, unlike traditional alarms that can cause confusion as to which vehicle is reversing and in which direction. This is especially important in a busy airport environment where people are trying to concentrate on announcements and looking at screens for flight information, rather than looking for moving vehicles. The directional aspect of bbs-tek alarms are invaluable for blind and hard of hearing people, who are able to locate the danger much easier than with traditional alarms.

BAA’s trolley trailers at Heathrow’s Terminal Four will be fitted with BBS-97 at 97db, ideal for medium duty vehicles and combie’s will be fitted with BBS-92, with a slightly reduced decibel rating for lower ambient noise level situations. The Electric vehicles will operate with front (BBS-87) and rear (BBS-82) broad band sound reversing alarms.

Feedback from staff at BAA has been positive especially from members of the information desk who find it easier to hear what passengers are saying above the noise from reversing vehicles.

BAA is not alone in appreciating the benefits of bbs-tek alarms. In recognition of its ability to eliminate noise nuisance, the bbs-tek has been well received by major commercial organisations and government bodies. The unique alarm is endorsed by the Noise Abatement Society, (NAS). Gloria Elliott, spokesperson for the charity said: “It is bringing relief to a lot of stressed people. I can see this modern piece of equipment playing a major part in vehicle safety, as well as reducing noise pollution.”

PIEK, the Dutch Government commissioned body created to set the standard for reduced noise levels in night-time delivery situations, have approved bbs-tek alarm for night-time deliveries in built-up areas, due to the low noise levels.

A further endorsement for the bbs-tek alarm has come from the city of New York. From January this year, operators working on construction sites in New York must comply with Mayor Bloomsberg’s noise regulations for ‘quieter’ reversing on their trucks. The bbs-tek is the only reversing alarm to be approved by the city’s Department of Environment Protection for use near sensitive areas such as; schools, hospitals, parks, places of worship and homes for the aged.
