Top Three Snacking Trends in China
Understanding what appeals to Chinese customers at the moment is crucial for firms seeking to enter the country's rapidly growing snack food sector. Here are three major eating trends in China:
1. Cravings for Snacks
According to a study by Mintel, 77% of Chinese consumers cite hunger satisfaction as the main reason they opt for snacks. This is more important than factors like satisfying hunger (59%), refueling during exercise (57%), and obtaining extra nourishment (53%). Eighty-two percent of Chinese consumers between the ages of 18 and 24 eat snacks to satisfy their cravings. Snacks must meet customers' desires, whether that be with enticing textures or sweet or salty flavors.
2. Crunchy Feels
It is well known that preferences for texture differ greatly depending on region and culture. Customers in China are hankering for crispy and crunchy snacks. The majority of Chinese consumers (59%) believe that biscuits or crackers should have a crunchy feel, per Mintel's study. Furthermore, 26% of Chinese customers report consuming more wafer biscuits now than they did six months ago, indicating the growing popularity of these biscuits due to their distinctive crispy texture.
3. Health-Oriented
Healthy snacking is also gaining popularity, particularly due to concerns about COVID-19. Due to COVID, 91% of Chinese consumers want to increase their efforts to eat and drink more healthfully, according to FMCG Gurus. Additionally, 44% want to improve their protein consumption, and 59% will continue to seek out fortified or functional meals and beverages with added components such as protein, vitamins, or probiotics. Given that 70% of Chinese customers want to continue exercising more following COVID-19, the emphasis on protein can also encourage healthy exercise practices.
What Are the Most Popular Chinese Snacks?
• Haw flakes
Made from the Chinese hawthorn fruit, haw flakes are classic Chinese confections in the form of flat discs. They are sweet and tart and are also called Shān Zhā BƐng. In Chinese homes, they are frequently presented to visitors or consumed by local children.
A standard product for haw flakes is a cylindrical container with thin, pink discs of candy piled on top of one another. Shandong and gourmet haw flakes are the two primary varieties. In Japan, Shandong variations are widespread. Gourmet varieties are more common in the West, usually have a broader diameter, and may have less sugar.
• Lay's chips
Despite being a worldwide potato chip brand, Lay's is a favorite in China due to its Chinese varieties. One of the most popular chip brands worldwide is Tomato Lay's, a unique taste created for the Chinese market. With a blast of authentic tomato flavor, it removes the need to match your chips with ketchup.
• Rice crackers
One of the most widely consumed snacks in East Asia is the rice cracker, known as senbei in Japan. Although it originated in China during the Han era, this crispy treat may have gained popularity in Japan. Chinese rice crackers are frequently baked or fried and seasoned with vinegar, soy sauce, or sesame seeds.
• Spicy duck necks
Duck necks are fried in sesame oil, blanched in boiling water, and seasoned with flavorful herbs and spices in China. Despite being a popular street meal in the nation, this fiery dish has found its way into international dishes. It goes well with cold beer.
• Milk Tea
Milk tea from several Asian areas is available in Chinese stores worldwide. Kirin Afternoon Tea, Gong Cha Milk Tea, and J-Basket Boba Bubble Tea Kit are some of the best brands.
