Technically the procedure can provide relief from a broad range of conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and renal failure since they arise through the sympathetic nervous system of the body. The idea of modulating the carotid body to have an effect on the sympathetic nervous system mediated diseases was first carried out sometime in the 1940?s but was carried through an open surgery and was still carried out in the 1990?s. Cibiem raised US$ 10 million to carry out first-in-man trials in Wroclaw Poland, where the device was being tested for efficacy in heart failure in August 2012. The company is backed by Venture Capitalist firms such as SV life Sciences, Third Rock Ventures and consulted by Coridea, which was also involved in the formation of Ardian Systems that was acquired by Medtronic for its renal denervation technology Symplicity. Coridea is an incubator, idea generator consulting firm that targets new technologies in the cardio-renal and cardio-pulmonary areas of medicine. Hypertension is a known cause of renal damage and chronic kidney disease. There are over 1.2 billion people over the world living with hypertension. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that over 700,000 people in United States only.

Around 5.7 million people have heart failure events every year, which costs the state over USD 34 billion in healthcare costs per year. The incidence rate is growing due to increased stress and lifestyle of the population, increasing population among other lifestyle related diseases. By 2020, over 50 million people are expected to be at risk of heart failure, since the consumption of cigarettes have also been on the rise. Smoking has been proven to be a major causative factor of heart failure by World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health. Since there is only one proprietor in this market, the opportunities for large companies to create strategies for acquiring this idea are large. Considering the potential of the device which caters to common diseases occurring in large populations, the market is expected to be worth billions post its device approval. Since its In-Man trials began last year, hopefully the device would enter the market sometime by mid-2017 to 2018.
