Press release from: gisela graf communications

With additional contributions by Philipp Meuser and Martin Pueschel

In no other place in Europe have changing ideologies and differing urban planning models left such a far-reaching mark as in Berlin. The German capital enables the reader to make a literal journey through history. In the shape of four excursions, the Architectural Guide Berlin presents prominent architectural highlights from Kurfürstendamm in the West to the prefab housing estates of the East.

The author Dominik Schendel presents in this guide 100 exemplary projects which relate a piece of urban history and are typical of the various districts and architectural styles. The first route runs along Unter den Linden in truly classic style, e.g. from the Brandenburger Tor across Schlossplatz to the Museumsinsel. This is followed by an excursion along the former Wall and its remains, from Potsdamer Platz to the East Side Gallery. A tour of the Kurfürstendamm shopping mile starts at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche and accompanies the reader along the so-called Shop Window for Freedom in the former West. Owing to its architectural diversity, those who wish to explore new territory far from well-trodden tourist paths are able to enjoy the surprises which the tour of prefab buildings in the former East has in store.

With its comprehensive maps and full-format aerial photographs, this book is an ideal companion when discovering the architecture of Berlin.

The four excursions consist of: The Former East – Unter den Linden; The Former West – Kurfürstendamm; On the Trail of the Berlin Wall; On the Trail of Plattenbau.

Flying Panels. How Concrete Panels Changed the World
Flying Panels. How Concrete Panels Changed the World
During the second half of the twentieth century countless concrete panels sailed through the skies: not only physically from factory to construction site, or from country to country, but also figuratively. The flying concrete panel could be found all over the world in countless pictures, on posters, in cartoons and movies and even as toys or theatre and opera sets. Their symbolism made them an emblem for the promise of
Mass Housing in the Socialist City. Heritage, Values, and Perspectives
Mass Housing in the Socialist City. Heritage, Values, and Perspectives
Prefabricated mass housing in cities from formerly socialist countries represents an enormous volume of residential housing today and is therefore an important tool for the future urban development within these cities. But transformation of these districts is needed due to the functional, societal, and technical challenges that they face. How can these - sometimes gigantic - structures from the 1960s and 70s be adapted to today's needs? How can a
