International Day of Non-Violence Gandhi – Shastri Jayanti Swachh Bharat Combo Celebrations at JMA Pilani

Who else but the Mahatma could have said "Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man." The very same Mahatma Gandhi in his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, 1927 also had said “There are many causes I would die for. There is not a single cause I would kill for." The UN International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri who as Prime Minister led the country during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 and gave the slogan of "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" which became very popular and is remembered even today.

JMA Pilani which has a rich tradition of observing various days of national and international importance organized a colorful combo celebration to mark the International Day of Non-Violence Gandhi – Shastri Jayanti. Students from different classes spoke about the life of both Gandhiji and Shastriji in English and Hindi. When a student dressed as Shastri came along with students dressed as Jawan and Kisan, the entire audience roared with the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. The presentation of "Gandhiji ke Teen Bandar" or three wise monkeys by a group of students drew loudest applause from the audience. The celebrations included several patriotic songs and favorite bhajans of Mahatma Gandhi.

Addressing the students, Prof BR Natarajan advised the students to take inspiration from the poems they learn in various classes as much as Gandhiji had taken inspiration from the ecstatic poems of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, a Persian poet and Sufi master born 810 years ago in 1207 on 30th September. Gandhi first read Rumi at the age of 26 and his poetry, translated by the English scholar Swanton, stayed with him till his last breath. Rumi's great thought, 'Choon jang ashad ifnaaz aize khoon-e-ifraad' -- ‘A battle is death's dance macabre’ – indeed had moved Gandhi intensely.

Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan thanked the team of teachers for the excellent organization of the proceedings and urged the students to make Swachh Bharat as not a once in a year activity for photo finish operations but as a daily mission with passion.
