Asian Artisans Are Rising Up Against Fashion Giants

09-21-2016 01:57 PM CET | Fashion, Lifestyle, Trends

Press release from: Efaisto

It’s a story of David and Goliath. Southeast Asia has been considered for decades as a manufacturing resource for the fashion industry, largely associated with low cost workforce, poor quality and mass-produced design. But skilled tailors, talented shoe makers and inspired leather artisans are gathering to show the world they are worth much more than that. Now they can use the power of e-commerce to directly reach customers around the world, cutting-out greedy intermediaries and traditional fashion brands.

Still fashion, but custom-made and fair:

Bernard fell in love with the feeling of wearing bespoke clothes for the first time whilst living in Vietnam, where he was working for a Belgian chocolate manufacturer. Meanwhile, Lou was dreaming about entrepreneurship in collaborative economy while working for a video game company in Ho Chi Minh City. Together, they came up with the idea of Efaisto, an e-commerce marketplace that helps the most talented artisans in Southeast Asia to sell their skills abroad. Doing so, they allow customers from around the globe to enjoy purchasing bespoke quality clothing and accessories in a fair way.

The maker controls the price:

That’s the real difference. On Efaisto, the artisans decide on their selling price and always get what they asked for. This translates to approximately 50% of the final price customers’ pay. Compare this to the big fashion brands who pocket a hefty 95% margin. On Efaisto you also know who you are buying from. You can review the maker’s profile and discover their story from the website. Efaisto selects the best artisans in Southeast Asia and executes a strict quality check on each order.

Some facts & figures:

Efaisto launched in April 2015 and has picked up customers and media attention mainly from France and Belgium; the 2 co-founders home countries. There are currently 30 makers selling on the platform, which is supported by a team of 8 in sales, operations, marketing and development. Efaisto is currently looking to raise $650.000 in round A seed funding to help them make fashion more personal and fair in other countries too.
