JMA Pilani Students Celebrate International Day of Peace

No one has doubt that there can be no sustainable future without a sustainable peace which must be built on sustainable development.

The theme chosen this year for celebration is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” Each year the International Day of Peace is observed all over the world from 1982 on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The root causes of many conflicts are directly related to or fuelled by valuable natural resources, such as diamonds, gold, oil, timber or water. The International Day of Peace offers people globally a shared date to think about how, individually, they can contribute to ensuring that natural resources are managed in a sustainable manner, thus reducing potential for disputes, and paving the road to a sustainable future, the "Future We Want".

But peace is about much more than putting weapons aside. For peace to be everywhere and in everyone there must be peace on earth, water, fire, air, sky, sun, moon, universe, in all living beings, in body, in mind, and soul as stated in the Sanskrit Shloka Bhoomi Mangalam, Udaka Mangalam, Agni Mangalam, Vayu Mangalam, Gagana Mangalam, Surya Mangalam, Chandra Mangalam, Jagat Mangalam, Jiva Mangalam, Deha Mangalam, Mano Mangalam, Atma Mangalam, Sarva Mangalam Bhavatu Bhavatu Bhavatu.

Sharing the above thoughts, Principal JMA Pilani Mrs Booma Natarajan read out the message of UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon “Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind” and urged the students to express their commitment to peace by becoming a champion of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The students recited the Sanskrit shloka for peace and did a peace dove formation to prove that Peace is not just yet another 5 letter word but a "divine manifestation which we have to give birth to within ourselves.
