Seniors Can Save On Medicare Prescription Drug Plans
The typical senior can save between $400 and $1,100 yearly by comparing and switching to a better Medicare prescription drug plan estimates the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance.More than 50 million Americans now have Medicare drug plan coverage reports Jesse Slome, director of the Medicare insurance advocacy organization. "Unfortunately, far too few take advantage of the opportunity Medicare provides to find and switch to better coverage," Slome states.
Medicare allows individuals with drug plan coverage to switch during the annual open enrollment which begins October 15. "That may seem months away but for many now is the right time to start thinking about next year," Slome advises. "Schedule an appointment with your physician or specialist before open enrollment begins. That way you can find out what new or different prescription drugs you'll be taking in 2025."
With over 700 different Medicare prescription drug plans available nationally according to the Association, seniors have many excellent options. "Some seniors will save by switching to a Medicare Advantage plan providing more optimal coverage for their particular drugs and healthcare needs," Slome explains. "Others with stand-alone Part D coverage can often find better coverage for lower monthly costs."
According to the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance most people pay an average of $55-per-month for Part D coverage. "But in Dallas or Phoenix, the lowest premium cost for 2023 is actually $0," Slome notes. "The highest cost one could pay for stand-alone Part D coverage is $108.30 in Dallas and $158.60 in Phoenix."

Slome notes that a number of organizations, including the Association, make available online drug plan comparison tools. To access visit the drug plan comparison quote engine via the AAMSI website at https://www.medicaresupp.org. "You ideally want one that requires no personal information be entered to avoid being added to mailing and call lists," Slome recommends. "Also a system that allows you to enter your specific prescription dosage and frequency as well as your preferred pharmacies."
