On Sunday, March 17, 2024 at 11 a.m., an exhibition of woodcuts and paper sculptures will open at the Tobien Gallery in Husum.
On display will be woodcuts by the artists Gerhard Hermanns, Manuel Knortz, Naoko Matsubara, Anastasiya Nesterova, Petra Schuppenhauer and Dieter Tautz. Claudia König adds the third dimension with figurative paper sculptures. Accompanying the exhibition, the Husum gallery is devoting a special focus to contemporary woodcuts from mid-March to mid-May.

On 15 May 2018, the German UNESCO Commission recognized the artistic and artisanal printing techniques as intangible cultural heritage. Every year, March 15 is therefore celebrated nationwide as Printmaking Day. Galerie Tobien is taking part with the After Work Preview event. From 5 p.m., art lovers will have the opportunity to visit the WOODCUT exhibition in advance and learn interesting details and insider knowledge about the art of printing.

Another highlight: on May 11 from 11 a.m., an artist talk with Dieter Tautz will take place as part of the exhibition. The artist will explain the creation of a woodcut in a communicative discussion format using printing blocks and illustrative material.

The basic condition for the development of the woodcut in Europe was the beginning of paper production in paper mills at the end of the 14th century. The woodcut flourished as a book illustration in Germany. Hatching and internal drawings made it possible to depict space and light more realistically - the woodcut became an art form with a high artistic standard. To this day, artists use its special expressiveness to produce original artist's books. With the Baroque era and the rise of etching, it temporarily lost importance. However, in the mid-19th century, a movement began to market printmaking, and later woodcuts in particular, as original graphic art and an alternative to painting. Printmaking became affordable. Today, the contemporary woodcut is popular with artists and art lovers, especially due to its high expressiveness and the many possibilities to experiment with color, form and cut.
