Exhibition - Landscape

On April 28, 2024 at 11 a.m., the Kunsthaus St. Peter-Ording will open two exhibitions entitled "Landscape". Gallery owner Marid Taubert will be presenting contemporary landscape painting in different techniques and variations at Galerie Tobien. The curator of the art collection Georg Panskus invites visitors to view the special features of the region from the perspective of regional artists.

In the age of climate change and artificial intelligence, landscape painting is enjoying particular interest. Its topicality can be seen in the number of visitors to major exhibitions, such as the recent one on "Caspar David Friedrich". Regional exhibition venues are also attracting great interest with current landscape exhibitions. With "Landscape", the Gallery Tobien is building on the theme of its last exhibition of paintings by the "North German Realists" and expanding the motif of landscape depiction to include the genres of watercolor, graphic art and photography.

The gallery is showing watercolors by Maneis and Jens Radeloff, paintings by Harald Feyen, Mario Malfer, Ute Martens, Mathias Meinel and Wolfgang Werkmeister, graphics by Georges Laporte and photography by Mario Reinstadler, among others.

The use of different techniques and the variety of motifs demonstrate the wide range of artistic interpretations of landscape painting and reveal the influences of previous movements.
The rapid rise of urbanization in the age of enlightenment and the industrial revolution changed the view of landscape and nature. People felt increasingly cramped in the urban environment. The search and longing for a life in harmony with nature is expressed in distant excursions, journeys or trips to the nearby countryside. Painters elevate the landscape to a motif in its own right and express their appreciation of nature in landscape paintings.

Three categories of landscape painting emerged. "The picturesque" depicts the beauty and wildness of nature, which appears untouched by man. "The pastoral" depicts idyllic and rural scenes. Grazing cattle and man-made landscape elements reflect the longing for simplicity and tranquillity. "The Sublime" visualizes the divine power of the force of nature. It warns man to oppose nature.

These aspects are also recognizable in the depiction of landscape and nature in current works. In its timeless beauty, the depiction of intact nature has been firmly anchored in the tradition of landscape painting for centuries. Generations of artists have dedicated themselves to it time and again. As a result, landscape painting always retains its topicality and is an unwavering reminder of the need to preserve natural habitats.
