Major international award for Pondicherry University professor
The Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University facilitating Prof S.A. Abbasi on getting the Kletz Merit Award
Professor S.A. Abbasi, of Pondicherry University, has been given this year's Trevor Kletz Merit Award, coordinated by the prestigious Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Centre at the Texas A&M University, USA.
As per a communication issued on behalf of the award selection committee, Prof Abbasi has been chosen in recognition for his "life-long contributions to the field of process safety, specifically aspects of accident forecasting, loss prevention, inherently safer design, domino effect modeling, greenbelt design, and environmental impacts associated with process industry accidents." The citation goes on to add that the Professor "now joins the galaxy of the world's top process safety experts who have been honoured since the inception of this award in 1998."
Professor Abbasi is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of process safety research in India and one among the top five most cited researchers in this field across the world. He is also ranked globally among the top 0.5% researchers, independent of the area of specialization, by all international ranking agencies. His work on developing clean-green yet inexpensive technologies for pollution control and waste utilization has resulted in 9 patents and several coveted honours/awards.
Professor Gurmeet Singh, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University, felicitated the awardee while the awardee thanked the VC for providing an environment highly conducive towards socially relevant R&D.
