Where do you come from? - Search for patchwork- and quilt patterns around the world

Munich, August 1, 2014: The theme of the new international community project organized by the online magazine „Quilt around the World” is “Where do you come from? – Stories as blocks. Blocks and their (hi)story.

From every era and every region, a wealth of cultures and traditions has originated with an endless variety of patterns, ornaments, symbols and graphic structures which can also be (re-)discovered as patchwork and quilting patterns.

All interested quilters around the globe, no matter whether novice, occasional quilter or professional, are invited to find modern or historical motifs which reflect their personal relationship with a geographical region, its culture or its traditions. This can be the place of birth or residence or a favorite travel destination.

The task is to interpret and (re-)design one motif as original patchwork block. Any textile technique is allowed and there are no restrictions as to colors and patterns of the used textiles. Along with the patchwork block a short description of the design’s background and – if available – photos of the original source of inspiration are to be submitted to illustrate why the motif was selected..

“We will publish all block patterns with their background stories and inspirations in a “Patterns around the World” book,” explains Jutta Hufnagel, managing director of Quilt around the World GmbH. In addition, the patchwork blocks will be used to assemble a large community quilt which will travel to international quilt shows around the world.

“Where do you come from?” is a non-profit project without commercial purpose. Proceeds from the book sale will be donated to the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF (www.unicef.org). “Together with hopefully many committed quilters around the globe we want to do our bit to make the world a safer, more colorful and therefore more livable place for our children in the future,” continues Hufnagel.

Participation in the “Where do you come from?” project is free of charge. The deadline is February 28, 2015.

Among all participants fabric packs from all over the world will be raffled off. Additionally, an international jury will select three winning entries based on how well the theme “Where do you come from?” was described in the background story and translated into a textile quilt block.
