The renowned Fraunhofer Institute ISIT and the ambitious fabless semiconductor company TRINAMIC go for a strategic co-operation with the purpose to turn scientific knowledge into a range of predominant products for Trinamic’s highly specialized motion control market.

Itzehoe/Hamburg, Germany, 30th September 2005: Fraunhofer-Institut for Silicon Technology (ISIT) and TRINAMIC today announced the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding with regard to a long-term strategic co-operation. ISIT is a world leading research facility with focal points in the area of MEMS, microelectronics and assembly / packaging technology.

Trinamic focuses solely on the fast growing market of electronics for fractional horse power motion control applications. The growing product portfolio includes Integrated circuits and miniaturized modules for the control of small electrical motors, i.e. stepper motors, brushless DC drives and piezoelectric actuators. Due to use of new design- and production methods and patented intellectual property, Trinamic’s products incorporate unique features like high efficiency and distinctive miniaturization. With such innovative products, the fast growing enterprise has achieved a good reputation, meanwhile also outside of the German home market. According to Trinamic, export is the main driver of the current business expansion.

Michael Randt, founder and CEO of Trinamic: „The co-operation with ISIT gives us access to a range of worldwide unique, leading technologies.” Professor Heuberger, ISIT, explains:” Trinamic has a sound, practical knowledge with regard to motion control applications. We will add our competence, skills and some first class technology to develop more predominant products for this exciting market.”

One of the goals of the collaboration will be the utilisation of most recent assembly techniques for the design of intelligent and dependable multi chip modules (MCMs) for smart power solutions and miniaturized mechatronic systems. The acronym MCM describes the assembly of multiple “chips” in one single package. This allows for the combination of several semiconductor technologies in one single module - a significant advantage whenever temperature and power dissipation are critical parameters. Furthermore, MCMs yield high flexibility with regard to application specific adaptation, at no or low NRE cost.

With this collaboration, Fraunhofer once again demonstrates that the German “Mittelstand” (SMEs / small and medium sized enterprises), backbone of Germany’s innovative potential, is a focus of Fraunhofer’s technology transfer activities - hereby helping to secure Europe as a location for research, development and production of advanced devices.

About Fraunhofer ISIT

The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology in Itzehoe, Germany, is one of Europe’s most modern research facilities for microsystem technologies. At the heart of the institute is a professional semiconductor production line in a 3,000-square-meter clean room. The Institute’s 150 scientists and technicians take methods that were originally used in the manufacturing of silicon circuits and employ them to develop and produce miniaturized components for sensors (pressure, acceleration, biochemical analysis, etc.) and actuators (valves, pumps, scanners, etc.) including the electronics and housing technology that these devices require. These components, which are often just fractions of a millimeter in size, are employed in medical devices, environmental technology, communications technology, the automotive industry, and machine manufacturing.
