TOS-100 - TRINAMIC Open Source Hardware
Arduino-shield simplifies Stepper Motor Control significantlyWhile the idea of Open Source is well known and accepted for several years with regards to software it is still not very common for hardware. Since 2005 Arduino shows how successful Open Source Hardware can be. Using daughter cards – so called shields, the user can easily realize extensions without the need of changing the Atmel AVR based Arduino Board. There are shields available for many different applications as communications and I/O.
Many members of the arduino-community have the challenge to control and drive stepper motors, which is one of the core competences of TRINAMIC. For this reason TRINAMIC designed its own shield in 2012 and presented it on SPS/IPC/Drives in Nuremberg, Germany after it was introduced to a wider audience on the electronica 2012 show. TOS-100 as the first member of TRINAMICs open source line is a Arduino-shield to drive one stepper motor. Schematics, Layout and all necessary Software as well as a Arduino-Class will be disclosed. The software is published under MIT license and the hardware under creative commons license to give developers all options for utilization for won designs.
TOS-100 can drive stepper motors with currents up to 2A (1.4A RMS) using TRINAMIC Motion Control TMC260 stepper driver. TOS-100 is fully configurable and can be controlled by nearly all outputs of the Arduino board, which allows for compatibility to most other shields. The shield comes with all SMT parts mounted. THT connectors are packed separately to allow for maximum flexibility.
TMC260 is designed for driving of bipolar stepper motors. The key features are besides optimum current regulation and market leading microstep resolution of 256μSteps per fullstep the configurability of all parameters by software:

• Microstep resolution
• stallGuard2TM sensorless load- and overload detection
• coolStepTM load dependent current control
• spreadCycleTM hysteresis chopper
• microPlyerTM 16-to-265μStep multiplier
• full protection and diagnosis
