Open House at Fraunhofer IESE

The two Kaiserslautern Fraunhofer Institutes for Experimental Software Engineering IESE and for Industrial Mathematics ITWM are a “Selected Landmark 2009” in the Germany-wide contest “Germany – Land of Ideas”. Following the official award ceremony on Wednesday, 28 October 2009, the two institutes will open their doors from 2 to 7 p.m. and are inviting the public to enjoy a varied program at the Fraunhofer Center on Trippstadter Straße.

The reason for the award is the successful dialog between research and industry at the annual conference of the Fraunhofer innovation cluster “Digital Commercial Vehicle Technology (DNT)”. In addition to a technical DNT exhibit, the special highlight of the day for visitors will be a tour of the Fraunhofer Truck parked at the center. There, the 60-year anniversary of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is used as an occasion to present state-of-the-art developments from the areas of health, environment, energy, safety and security, and communication. The smart giant will already be open at 10 a.m. to receive many curious visitors.

In addition to guided tours of the building, films, and presentations starting at 2 p.m., there will be a series of exhibitions in the atriums of the two institutes: ITWM will offer a search for faults on leather, flood simulations, or the visualization of multi-dimensional data; IESE will open its laboratory apartment for assisted living systems and will offer regular presentations of its “Virtual Office of the Future”, 3D visualizations, and robot workshops. Real commercial vehicles, such as an agricultural machine from John Deere or an original truck-mounted crane of the Terex company, will help the visitor to get a better understanding of the technically sophisticated inner workings of commercial vehicles. In addition, a small miniature excavator will invite visitors to try their own hand at excavating.
Of course, there must be time for culture also, in addition to research and science: At 6 p.m., two new sculptures will be revealed at ITWM, followed by a reading of two actors from the Pfalztheater; music will be provided by the jazz group “Just Friends”, who will already play in the afternoon, too.
