According to the UN-Water June 2020 report, out of the total water available on the earth's surface, just 3% is fresh water. Of this, 69% is available in glaciers, 30% underground, and 1% is located in lakes, rivers, and swamps. The availability of fresh water has decreased significantly across the globe. On the other hand, water pollution has increased exponentially over the last few years. The rise in industrialization has boosted the volume of wastewater, especially in industries such as food & beverages, power generation, oil & gas, chemicals, pulp & paper, and mining.

Furthermore, the discharge of untreated polluted water into rivers and lakes, which are major sources of freshwater, results in contamination of the freshwater with harmful, toxic, and hazardous substances and chemicals.
