No more relying on the weather

markilux has equipped an Australian winery with a large awning system

The Brokenwood winery is in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia. In October last year, the outside terrace of the estate was fitted with an awning system from manufacturer markilux. The newly designed open space can now be used for events and wine tastings whatever the weather.

Over the past 50 years, Brokenwood, just over 165 kilometres north-west of Sydney, has become one of the most well-known wineries in Australia. Today, wine tours and tastings are held here regularly. But until last autumn, the estate's large outside terrace had not been used optimally for the hospitality business. This was something that had to change, which is why the management of the winery decided to have the outdoor seating area covered with a large awning system from manufacturer markilux.

Looking for protection from poor weather and the sun
"We covered an area of almost 180 square metres in the winery here in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Our solution consists of three markilux markant systems with four folding-arm awnings of the markilux 970 model additionally mounted on the sides and front," says Neil Marot, General Manager at the Australian subsidiary. This combination offers maximum flexibility to shade the entire area or only parts of it. The sun and weather protection system is also equipped with dimmable LED light and infrared heaters. That was exactly what the customer was looking for. Because the idea was, in the future, to be able to use the terrace for a range of events - completely independently from the weather and the time of day.

Design to suit the architecture
But alongside these more functional aspects, the topic of modern design played a decisive role in the choice of product. The customer wanted the look of the awning system to skilfully underline the discreetly natural, wood-clad architecture of the building complex. "But, at the same time, good design always has to go hand in hand with excellent, reliable technology," says Mr Marot. "Here in subtropical New South Wales, we not only expect a lot of sun, but also rain throughout the year. An awning system has to be made to cope with these climatic conditions. And we have the largest product range in the world for that," he adds.

Expert advice on setup
It also takes plenty of expertise to be able to realise such a large shading project. "team : project" from markilux thus worked together with specialists Blindmaster from Brookvale, a suburb of Sydney. The company has been familiar with the awning specialist's product portfolio for years now and has extensive experience in the area of sun protection. "We were able to set up the system in just two days and the customer is totally satisfied with the result. Because now they can use the outdoor area for business - whatever the weather. And that's a success for us, too," says a satisfied Neil Marot.
