09-11-2013 07:53 PM CET | Arts & Culture

Press release from: Adelphi University

David Holzman, called a “master pianist” by The New Yorker, will perform “Keyboard Kaleidoscope”, a special concert of contemporary works for piano, on Sunday, October 27 at 5:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC), 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Holzman, a pianist, writer, and lecturer, has won acclaim for both his recitals and recordings which focus on 20th century keyboard masterworks.

Described as “the Horowitz of modern music” (Jerry Kuderna, San Francisco Classical Voice) for his spirited performances, Holzman has premiered the works of composers from Schoenberg and Bloch, to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Donald Martino, to the younger generation of American composers and made first recordings of many of them. His CD, Stefan Wolpe: Compositions for Piano on the Bridge label received wide acclaim and won Holzman a Grammy nomination in 2003, as well as an Indie Award for best classical album and an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for his liner notes. In 2011, Holzman released a follow up CD, Music of Stefan Wolpe, Vol. 6.

Holzman has performed throughout the world giving lecture-recitals at the Museum of the Diaspora in Jerusalem, the Holocaust Museum in Washington and the African Museum in New Jersey, and at distinguished universities throughout America. He has been featured at festivals such as Darmstadt, Leningrad Spring, the Wolpe Festivals in Toronto, Chicago and New York, the Schoenberg Festival in Vienna, the Alternative Festival in Moscow and the Festival Internacional De Musica Nueva Siglo XXI in Vera Cruz, Mexico. He has received recording grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alice B. Ditson Fund and the Aaron Copland Foundation and commissioning grants from such organizations as Reader's Digest-Meet the Composer and New Jersey Council on the Arts.

Holzman received his bachelor of music degree from Mannes College of Music where he studied with Paul Jacobs. He completed his master’s degree in music at Queens College where he worked with Nadia Reisenberg. In addition to writing and lecturing extensively on 20th century music, Holzman teaches at Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus.

The program at Adelphi will feature pieces composed by Adelphi Professors Sidney Marquez Boquiren and Paul Moravec. The evening will include: Sidney Marquez Boquiren Three Preludes; Elmar Lampson Drei Klavierstucke To Axion Esti; John MacDonald Selections from Piano Books; Alba Potes El Jardin de Tomas; Paul Moravec Isle of Manhattoes; Noel Zahler Piano Etudes; Poul Ruders Selections from Thirteen Postludes.
Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center is Long Island’s premier cultural arts venue for entertainment of all kinds.
