A "green" CD release - without CDs?

Jennifer Leonhardt is releasing her new album, The Minstrel’s Daughter in November on Austin’s GRASSROOTS RECORDS and guess how many CDs the label is pressing? Zero – Zilch – Nadda. Instead, Grassroots is making a “GREEN RELEASE” by exclusively offering it for download of high resolution mp3 tracks for sale at AustinMusicDownload.com and offline sales with download cards made of recycled plastic at her live shows.

“It was important to me to continue an intimate approach and the release on a local, woman-owned mp3 download site feels perfectly congruent with how I would naturally want to do business,” according to Leonhardt.

“Jennifer always “got it” in terms of what the download site was all about,” remarked Carolyn Holzman - creator of AustinMusicDownload.com, “From the first day her music was available on the site, she has been what I would call an ‘ideal artist’ , I never had to rephrase anything for her. She knew exactly what I meant and how it could help promote Austin artists and their music.”

Previously a digital release has usually implied a free download but in this case, this is a release with the same approach to promotion one would apply to any physical product. The major difference is the reduction of plastic impacting the landfill. The download cards of recycled plastic will be available at shows for the same price as an album download with redemption instructions on the back.

In addition to the download, efforts are being made to provide a "bonus" track for all download purchases both online and offline which will involve emailing those who purchased with an offer to receive a free exclusive unreleased track.
