Dr. Marius Lazar, Dr. David Seideman and Dr. Lucas Smith are now helping selected patients with rare diseases free of charge

Do you still remember the hit US series "House, MD"? A medical doctor who is as moody as he is brilliant, driving his team crazy, but with an almost detective like talent. He correctly diagnosed the rarest of illnesses. Now, what made “House, MD” so popular? Well, it's simple: he looked beyond the textbook horizon and gave free rein to logical thinking. For the good of his patients.

Now, neither Dr. Marius Lazar, Dr. David Seideman nor Dr. Lucas Smith are as grumpy and infallible as the fairy tale character "House, MD". Nevertheless, they too have set themselves the task of helping people with rare to ultra-rare diseases (orphan diseases) where textbook medicine has no answers. Strictly scientifically and exclusively with methods of "mainstream medicine".

There are now several centers for rare diseases in most G7 countries, but even these are - at least in the opinion of Dr. Lazar, Dr. Seideman and Dr. Smith - sometimes too narrowly focused on certain conditions. "There are infinitely more diseases that have not yet been identified than those we find in the textbooks", warns neurologist Dr. David Seideman. In addition, he says, the focus of many rare disease centers is too often "narrowed to exotic conditions that have already been described. But who helps those who have a disease that doesn't yet have a name or is so rare that it's hardly known," Seideman points out.

In Dr. Marius Lazar, Seideman and Smith have a boss at their side for whom "true medical art begins where textbook knowledge ends." Nothing is more dangerous than hastily putting patients into a box, because quite often a supposed diagnosis is only the symptom of an underlying and hardly known disease.

Since the three physicians are internationally active - the internet makes it possible - they have agreed with Luzia Healthcare u.n.a. to take care of a certain number of patients per year free of charge. "For many patients, it is already a relief to finally have a definite diagnosis," emphasizes Dr. Marius Lazar. This also helps the treating physicians on site to adjust the therapies accordingly”, he adds. When asked if he likes to be compared to "House, MD," Lazar just laughs with amusement. He simply wants to do his job, just like his colleagues.

If Dr. Lazar and his team do indeed come across previously unknown findings, they don't hesitate for long.
