Peak Performance: 5 Strategies to Developing an Unbeatable Mindset for Corporate Leadership Success

peak performance, leadership

peak performance, leadership

When it comes to leadership possibilities, it’s important to have the right mindset. But, how do you reach peak performance when it comes to the best strategies to take you forward? What portion of your success is tied to mindset?

Executive Coach and Author, Marshal Goldsmith of What Got You Here Won’t Get You There once said, ““Successful people become great leaders when they learn to shift the focus from themselves to others.”

It’s important to understand that the business world isn’t revolving around your wants and needs. That may sound callous, but having a teamwork mentality, rather than a me first one will take you further in your career. When it comes to leadership it’s about lifting and inspiring others, not simply taking care of yourself.

This is the first step to consider when working toward a winning mindset. Let’s dig deeper to see what crucial elements you’ll want to incorporate on your path to becoming a more successful corporate leader.

Here are 5 key strategies to help you move forward with the right leadership mindset:

1. Be willing to get out of your comfort zone and adapt to change
2. Be willing to learn from mistakes
3. Think strategically and be innovative by looking beyond today to see the full picture
4. Be self-aware and recognize when you aren’t or don’t have the answer
5. Smart communication and the ability to inspire and help your team grow
While there’s a slew of other ideas that could go into the list, some are more important than others. With that in mind, these five strategies are ones that we feel deserve the most attention. Let’s dive further into each strategy to understand what they’re truly about and why they matter when you’re looking to hit peak performance.

The first we’re going to look at is the ability to get out of your comfort zone, along with the willingness to change. Why is this so important, and what does that mean when it comes to growing as a leader?
1. Get Uncomfortable: Nobody likes that uneasy feeling you get when dealing with the unfamiliar—the moment when you head into new territory and don’t feeling confident about the direction, your skills, or knowledge. A leader, however, will see it as an opportunity to grow and learn. It’s important to understand growth comes from change.

We all like the comfort of our little #cocoons#. We know what to expect, and we know how things get accomplished. When you stay wedged in that familiar place there’s no innovation or improvement. How do you inspire others if you settle for stagnancy?

If you’re content with stagnancy, you may not be in the right job. An important piece of becoming a well-respected and strong leader in the corporate world is knowing how to lead a team forward, even when met with challenges.

This can-do attitude is vital and the sign of a good leader. If you’re not willing to be uncomfortable, it may be time to work on this mindset issue. If you’re hoping to grow in your leadership career, this is a must.

2. Learn from Your Mistakes: We often put a stake in the ground and proclaim our successes, but when it comes to a failure, we want to sweep them under the carpet and look away. Leadership expert, John C. Maxwell says, “A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.”

It can be hard to face your mistakes, especially when others rely on you to lead the way. But a true leader can acknowledge that things may not have gone how they’d intended, and you must change course. Don’t blame, point fingers, or pretend it didn’t happen.

You face what’s before you and right your ship. That is how you earn respect, not by pretending it didn’t happen. Those who are willing to learn from their mistakes and not discredit others or cause a commotion just to save face are the ones who are true leaders.

Legendary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden once said, “You are not a failure until you start blaming others for your mistakes.” How true.

3. Think Strategically and Innovate: If you can only see right in front of you, you’ll be left behind. It’s the ability to see beyond what is currently working, that’s where innovation and strategy work hand-in-hand. The strength of a leader is not to bathe in stagnancy, but to grow and help others grow.

Professor, writer, and consultant Peter F. Drucker says, “If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.” It’s easy to grow comfortable in sticking with what works, but as we learned earlier, getting too comfortable can hold you back. The willingness to get uncomfortable will help you think beyond today. Innovation comes to those who seek it out, not those who sit where they are.

The American Management Association (AMA) highlights four key elements ( #:~:text=Strategic%20leadership%20is%20about%20a,leadership%20mindset%E2%80%9D%20in%20its%20people. ) for developing leadership skills: responsibility, empowerment, accountability, and learning. They show that if you take those elements and combine, in turn, it can help develop strategic thinking in your employees.

Part of an organization’s growth and leadership require strategic thinking. The right mindset says that these are skills that your team can develop ( https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-squeaky-wheel/201502/can-leadership-be-learned-or-are-you-born-it ) . A good leader helps nurture their team and encourages innovation and the drive to succeed. They don’t settle for mediocrity.

4. Be Self-aware: Knowing where your strengths lie is important, but just as important is recognizing areas of weakness. One of the challenges that comes into play is understanding that you’re working as part of a team. In a me focused mindset, the desire to prove ourselves and worth can cloud our judgement.

Your behaviors are reflected in how you lead, how you delegate, and how you step aside and let somebody else drive those areas where you have a weakness. Being in charge doesn’t always mean standing in the front, sometimes it’s directing from behind, and knowing when to step aside.

Look at the broader picture when it comes to company growth, not your own. Learn from others. Listen to feedback. With the right mindset, you’ll bring everybody forward with you.

5. Communicate and Inspire: Harvard Business School Online lists communication as a crucial element and quality of good leaders ( https://online.hbs.edu/blog/post/leadership-communication ) , both verbal and non-verbal cues. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey says, “Leadership is communicating others’ worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves.”

When it comes to developing a solid mindset focused on peak performance, a corporate leader knows that he’s part of a team environment, and leading others is the ability to inspire them to do their best and help them reach their goals.

Having the strong, well-developed mindset is an important part of what sets a good leader and a great leader apart. Build trust and relationships, innovate, inspire, and communicate clearly and transparently with those on your team. Being authentic with a strong vision is vital, but being able to express those values clearly is just as important.

When it comes to building a strategic mindset, peak performance comes when you’re willing to grow. While you may carry most of the qualities mentioned above, if you don’t, with the right attitude and time you can acquire those skills.
Seek out mentors and learn from others. Change doesn’t always come easy—but without change, there is no growth.

With that, I’ll leave you with two quotes from Robin Sharma:
“Everything is created twice, first in the mind and then in reality.” The next speaks to change, “Change is hardest at the beginning, messiest in the middle and best at the end.”
You’ve got the means to enhance your career and build your leadership skills. All it takes is the right mindset to step forward.
