The ‘pergola stretch’ by markilux has been awarded the Innovation Prize at the ‘R+T digital’ trade fair

The ‘pergola model’ developed by awning expert markilux was able to impress with its size and sophisticated technology during the nomination of the innovation prize 2021 at the International Trade Fair ‘R+T digital’. For example, the unique toothed drive belt of this awning with folding awning cover has made it possible to build impressive XXL awning sizes. Pre-assembled component packages and the well thought-through construction simplify installation as well. For this reason, the jury awarded it a gold certificate in the category ‘Outdoor’.

Michael Gerling, Director of R&D and Production at markilux, as well as Sven Kröner, head of R&D were able to follow the presentation of the innovation prize live when took place on 22 February on the platform of the ‘R+T digital’ trade fair.

A product idea comes to fruition

‘We knew already that the ‘pergola stretch’ had been nominated. But to win a gold certificate in the category 'Outdoor' really was the cherry on the cake’, enthused Mr Gerling. It has confirmed once again the importance of this markilux product idea. For years the ‘pergola family’ has been a good seller. The new ‘stretch’ version in the range is adding a new model which makes even larger sizes possible and therefore creates even more opportunity to deck out patios and terraces with an awning system.

Impressive surface area

Sven Kröner, who was part of the team that developed this awning with folding cover technology, explains: ‘The technology has been deliberately designed to be able to cope with very large areas. In a single unit it can already cover almost 50 square metres. And that can be multiplied a number of times, if several units are joined together.’ Up to five awnings, side by side, make it possible to cover a maximum area of 175 square metres. The use of waterproof and highly flame-retardant fabrics means that the system offers particularly effective protection against both sun and rain to both the domestic and the commercial client.

Installation-friendly technology

‘In order to make such large dimensions in an awning system possible, we have developed a unique toothed drive belt mechanism. The force required to open and close the system is transferred exceptionally well via the lateral guide tracks to the folded cover attached to transverse carrying bars’, Mr Kröner emphasizes. Because of the pre-assembled component packages and the way it has been designed, the awning is very easy to install.

The award is a particularly meaningful accolade

But in addition, the whole package of accessories, which include an aluminium coverboard, lighting options, heaters, vertical roller blinds and screens, puts a clear focus on providing comfort. ‘All the technical details make our 'pergola stretch' a highly innovative product which will fulfil the demand for generously proportioned awning systems and justify its place in the market’, Mr. Gerling believes. The gold innovation award lends this model a particular stature and with the ‘German Design Award 2021’ is already the second award this product has won.
