Press release from: Catholics for amnesty

Internet initiative opposes Cardinal Martino

Hanover / Wuppertal, Germany, June 21, 2007 - This Thursday, the Internet initiative „Catholics for amnesty“ went online und asks all Catholics to make donations to amnesty international. With its appeal, the initiative directly opposes Cardinal Martino‘s boycott call. Martino, on his part, had called upon all Catholics and Catholic organizations not to support the human rights organization financially any longer.

Martino, President of the Ponitifcal Council for Justice and Peace, accused amnesty of an about-turn in abortion. According to Martino, the organization betrayed its mission. amnesty‘s deputy secretary Kate Gilmore strongly criticized the Vatican‘s move. „The Catholic Church, through a misrepresented account of our position on selective aspects of abortion, is placing in peril work on human rights,“ Gilmore said. She stressed that amnesty was not promoting abortion as a universal right. Instead, the organization believes women have a right to choose abortion when their human rights have been violated, particularly in cases of rape and incest.

„We prefer human rights over dogmas“, say the three initiators Dirk Kirchberg, Lars Heidemann and Marco Littges.
