The Infinity School’s Webinar On Cyber Security Covered Internet Safety Tips In Times Of Online Learning
The Infinity School in Greater Noida West, an emerging innovator in the field of enquiry-driven, thinking-led learning, hosted a webinar on cyber security for parents, educators, and students, on Sunday, 6 September, in response to the parents’ rising concerns around online safety of children, magnified by increasing screen time & regressing mental health. The webinar, ‘Cyber Safety: An essential measure in times of online learning,’ put together some great internet safety tips by cyber security expert Mr. Rakshit Tandon, as well as pointers on ensuring good mental health of children by renowned child psychologist Dr. Bhavna Barmi.
Despite the media’s increased attention to child safety, cyber security, and mental health of children, many at times, students aren’t completely aware of the risks they face in the cyber space. Also, with education being delivered online during the lockdown, there are greater risks of students getting exposed to undesirable content, or falling prey to online scams, frauds, identity theft, etc. Families may be using the best cyber safety software, apps & firewalls on personal devices, but the thought & actions of end-users (netiquettes) play a huge role in ensuring safety on the internet. Even the slightest negligence or lack of awareness could result in bigger mishaps.
Cyber security expert Mr. Rakshit Tandon, highlighted little do’s & don’ts that kids and parents could follow at their end to ensure they stay safe online. E.g., turning off auto-suggestions or switching on safe search on browsers while surfing, using free tools like Google Family Link to restrict screen time, using 2-step verification & privacy settings on social media accounts, and filters to block age-inappropriate content on OTT Platforms. Mr. Tandon also talked about the golden rule of using social media—STP (Stop. Think. Post), which should be considered before posting content online.
During discussion, child psychologist Dr. Bhavna Barmi covered tips for parents & students on initiating conversation regarding safe internet use and coping with traumatic events like cyberbullying, blackmail, trolling, etc. She requested all adults to be a role model of healthy electronic use by capping their personal screen times, creating technology-free zones inside homes (like the dining area), and to unplug all screens at least half an hour before the bedtime to spend quality time together with kids. Dr. Barmi’s action plan on digital parenting covered specific solutions on what to do if the child is accidentally exposed to age-inappropriate content on the internet, when the child is bullying someone or getting bullied by some online, and how to deal with emotional outburst of teenagers.
Infinity School’s director, Mr. Harinder Chhabra and the Curriculum & Training head, Ms. Upasana Bhattacharya moderated the panel discussion on cyber security. Experts addressed parents’ concerns, answered questions around internet safety and offered tips. To sum up, they saw online education as a great opportunity to psycho-analyse and digitally empower children so they don’t just stay safe on the internet, but also internalise online ethics and best internet practices.
The webinar clippings and takeaways are available on The Infinity School’s website and social media handles.
