Social isolation, according to the British Columbia Ministry of Health, is already an emerging issue among seniors even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with long-term social distancing, this will all the more pose unique challenges for them (Canadian Medical Association Journal Group). As they are advised to stay at home, they can no longer go out for meals, entertainment, and exercise. With their families making sure of their safety, all planned gatherings and weekly activities are suspended. If deprived of social connectedness, this may result in reduced social skills, higher risk of negative health behaviors (including not eating well and being sedentary), falls, and hospitalization, according to the Report on the Social Isolation of Seniors.
To maintain social connections with seniors, their families and communities must adapt remote communication. Regular voice and video calls and chats can make a difference for families whose senior loved ones are not living with them. Food delivery arrangements can also make sure that they eat healthy meals consistently. These may be simple acts but would mean so much that they will feel loved and connected even with the current situation. No one is with them at home?
