Dementia Care at Home: A Feasible Option for Seniors in Canada

Victoria, B.C. (November 4, 2022) - According to the 2018 Dementia in Canada summary report by the Canada Institute for Health Information, the number of Canadians ages 65 and older continues to increase-and so are the seniors living with dementia. Every five years, the occurrence of dementia for Canadians aged 65 and older more than doubles--from less than 1% of Canadians ages 65 to 69 to an estimate of 25% for those 85 and older. The key findings indicated that for every four seniors aged 85 and over, one had been diagnosed with dementia.

The same report discussed dementia in home and community care. It disclosed that of the number of seniors with dementia, 61% stay at home. Alzheimer Society of Canada's CEO, Pauline Tardif, said they want to stay in their homes to maintain independence and engage with the community.

However, they need support while staying there. The report revealed that seniors with dementia who are at home present more challenges because they are more clinically complex. For every five of them, one has severe cognitive impairment. For every four, one shows signs of depression, demonstrates responsive behaviours, and must get full assistance or depend on someone to help with activities of daily living.

The Public Health Agency of Canada stated in its A Dementia Strategy for Canada report that there are three best options when caregiving becomes more challenging. One will be to choose supportive housing. The second is to transition to long-term care. The third is to hire an in-home caregiver to provide additional assistance with home care.

Therefore, getting help from an in-home caregiver is necessary while home care is still a viable option.

Surework Home Care Solutions, which offers dementia care as one of its senior care services, can help families take care of their senior family members with dementia at home. Its caregivers will help seniors with dementia live in a safe and comfortable environment as it focuses on providing consistent quality senior care.
