Terry Walker says a car scrappage scheme is needed.

The star of a popular TV show called The Scrappers is calling for a car scrappage scheme to be introduced to help jumpstart the economy and replace polluting models on our roads.
Terry Walker runs the car scrap yard ‘The Scrappers’ in Bolton and says that car owners need a financial incentive to scrap their cars and buy new models that have lower emissions.
The programme he appeared in was a primetime hit for BBC1 and later for Dave and featured Terry and his team in their vehicle scrap yard and won legions of fans.
He said: "The last car scrappage scheme was very successful and helped to reduce vehicle emissions.
"While some car manufacturers have their own car scrappage scheme in place, it would be great to see the government take the lead and introduce a nationwide scheme to help people replace older cars with newer, less polluting vehicles."
Car scrapping scheme launched in 2009
A previous car scrapping scheme launched in 2009 saw 390,000 new cars being bought over the scheme’s 10 months of operation.
The idea behind the scheme was to replace older, polluting cars with greener, cleaner models by using a financial incentive.
The UK government spent £400 million that gave motorists up to £2,000 off a new car and many car manufacturers added a financial incentive too, worth up to £1,000.
The scheme had various stipulations including that the vehicle to be scrapped had to be older than 10 years and must have been owned by the person scrapping it for at least one year.
‘We look to remove scrap and salvage cars for customers’
Mr Walker added: "Now that the Covid-19 lockdown is being relaxed, here at The Scrappers car scrap yard, we have introduced various social distancing measures as we look to remove scrap and salvage cars for customers.
"While we pay good prices for scrap cars, the price of scrap metal has fallen and there will be vehicle scrapping firms who will struggle because of this and a new car scrappage scheme will help everyone, particularly to encourage people back into car showrooms."
Calls from various professional organisations have failed to result in a car scrapping scheme being launched with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy clearly stating recently that there are no plans to introduce a car scrappage scheme in the UK.
Car manufacturers with a car scrappage scheme
The car manufacturers with a car scrappage scheme in place currently includes Ford with an offer of up to £2,000 for a new model; Hyundai is offering between £1,500 and £5,000 and Kia is offering up to £2,000 off two models.
Other carmakers with car scrapping schemes include Mazda with an offer of up to £5,000 and Toyota who are offering up to £4,000 off new models.
