Autoimmune forms of complement associated kidney disorders
"The field of autoimmune forms of kidney disorders is rapidly progressing and new autoimmune forms and new pathological principles are emerging. Based on similarities among various related kidney disorders, common pathophysiological principles are currently defined. This reveals a spectrum of disorders which is relevant for therapy," Professor Dr. Peter Zipfel and colleagues report."Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and membranproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN ore dense deposit disease) represent severe kidney diseases, which have in common that they are associated with defective control of the alternative complement pathway. The two related disorders represent as autoimmune forms and also as genetic disorders.
A relationship between different kidney diseases such as HUS, MPGN, C-3- and CFHR5 nephropathies is currently emerging due to the identification of overlapping genetic scenarios and common autoimmune forms." Zipfel et al. summarize these common principles and the factors that show a common relationship and focus in particular on the autoimmune forms of HUS and MPGN.
