28 Dec is no ordinary date as it happens to be the birthday of Padma Vibhushan Shri Dhiubhai Ambani who epitomized the dauntless entrepreneurial spirit of a visionary always on the march to change the destiny of a nation. His success story fired the imagination of a generation of Indian entrepreneurs, business leaders and progressive companies. For many, he still remains an icon, a role model to be emulated. It was under his visionary leadership the Reliance Group emerged as the largest business conglomerate in India, and carved out a distinct place for itself in the global pantheon of corporate giants.

To commemorate the 87th birth anniversary of Shri Dhirubhai Ambani the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers - IIChE Jaipur Regional Centre - JRC in association with Department of Chemical Engineering, MNIT Jaipur and National Institute of Technology Uttarakhand organized an International Conference on Energy & Environment: Challenges and Opportunities for Industries during 28 - 29 Dec 2019. The venue for the same was the elegant Neeti Sabhagar, Prabha Bhawan, MNIT Jaipur. Reliance Industries Ltd was the platinum sponsor while one among India’s top 10 Chemical companies Aarti Industries Ltd was the Diamond sponsor. The event was supported by Maharatna GAIL India and Institute of National Importance MNIT Jaipur.

The inaugural function started with tilak bouquet and colourful Rajasthani saafa for all dignitaries followed by auspicious lamp lighting ceremony. Prof S P Chaurasia from MNIT Jaipur who is Chairman IIChE JRC gave the welcome address. Other dignitaries who addressed the gathering included conference Chair Person Prof M M Sharma and Prof G D Yadav ICT Mumbai, Prof S V Satyanarayana President IIChE from JNTU Anantapur and Prof S L Soni Director NIT Uttarakhand. The dignitaries released the souvenir for the conference.

Shri M Ranga Rao from BARC presented the credentials of Sri Rajendra Gogri Chairman Managing Director of the billion dollar company that is growing everyday Aarti Industries Ltd who to a thunderous round of applause received the coveted Lala Shriram National Award for Leadership in Chemical Industry. Sri Rajendra Gogri in his awe inspiring speech gave an overview of the Chemical Industry at Global level as well as National level, the phenomenal growth of China in Chemical sector and India’s race to reach a preeminent position.

Prof G D Yadav did the most difficult task of presenting the citation highlighting the contribution of globally acclaimed Chemical Engineer Padma Vibhushan Prof M M Sharma for the impressive growth of Chemical industry in India and putting ICT Mumbai which was erstwhile UDCT Mumbai as a centre of excellence in chemical engineering education. Prof M M Sharma for the Dhirubhai Ambani oration lecture kept the entire audience spell bound by doing an anatomy and surgery of Chemical Technologies in Organic and Inorganic chemicals, Petroleum and Petrochemicals, Polymers, Coal Chemicals, Alcohol based chemicals with clinical precision highlighting various milestones and breakthrough over various decades.

The post lunch session of inaugural day had invited lectures by various Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award winners. RPG Life Science Padma Vibhushan Prof M M Sharma medal was awarded to Dr Ajay K Dalai Professor Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering from University of Saskatchewan Canada. Labindia’s Padma Bhushan Professopr R Kumar Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award was bagged by Mr Rakesh Kumar Mittal Chief General Manager PC Operations GAIL (India) Ltd. Dr Vishnu Pareek Professor and Head of Western Australian School of Mines Mineral Energy and Chemical Engineering Curtin University Australia was the recipient of CSIR NCL Professor K Venkataraman Chemcon Distinguished speaker award.

The Solenis Bharat Ratna Professor C N R Rao medal went to none other than awards galore Dr G D Yadav FTWAS, FNA, FNASc,FRSC (UK), FIChemE (UK), FIIChE, Emeritus Professor of Eminence and Former Vice Chancellor and R.T. Mody Distinguished Professor J.C. Bose National Fellow (Govt. of India). CSIR CLRI Padma Bhushan Dr Nayudamma Chemcon distinguished speaker award went to none other than Dr Debasish Kuila Professor and Research Director NSF CREST Bioenergy Center, North Carolina A&T State university. Dr S SridharSenior Principal Scientist CSIR IICT Indian Institute of Chemical Technology Hyderabad spoke on membrane facilitated processes for sustainable recovery of valuable resources.

The second day proceedings included apart from various technical sessions, invited lectures by Dr AB Gupta Professor (HAG) MNIT Jaipur and Sri U C Bajpai IFFCO Kalol unit; CSIR CSMCRI Chemcon Distinguished Speaker award winner Dr Jayant Kumar Singh IIT Kanpur; CSIR NEERI Chemcon Distinguished speaker award winner Dr Vimal Chandra Srivastava IIT Roorkee and Hetero Drugs Professor GS Ladha Chemcon Distinguished Speaker award winner Dr SP Chaurasia MNIT Jaipur.

The participants for the conference included students and faculty from various institutions like Amity, JKLU and Banasthali which is second best women’s university as per THE Times Higher Education Global Rankings. Principal organizing secretary of the International conference, Dr Madhu Agarwal Head of Department of Chemical Engineering MNIT Jaipur did the thankless job of presenting the Vote of thanks. The deliberations and proceedings of this conference are bound to evolve holistic thinking on challenges and opportunities for industries pertaining to energy and environment and set pace for new frontiers in bringing about system changing solutions.
