On Global Handwashing Day JMA Pilani Primary Students Learn Eight Steps to Good Health

Teaching children the importance of washing their hands with soap is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways of preventing disease. According to UNICEF, hand washing with soap, even before preparing food, is rarely practiced in many poor countries - leading to the rapid spread of deadly bacteria, diarrhea and pneumonia in young children. Diarrhea and pneumonia are leading causes of death for children under the age of five. Handwashing with soap is among the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent these diseases.

The first Global Handwashing Day was held on 15 Oct 2008, when over 120 million children around the world washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries. The 2019 Global Handwashing Day theme is “Clean Hands for All.” This year’s theme follows the push to leave no one behind in the Sustainable Development Agenda. Inequalities in handwashing facilities and effective handwashing promotion programs can put individuals at higher risk for diseases that impact their health, education, and economic outcomes. This year’s theme reminds us that we must be inclusive when addressing handwashing disparities.

Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan along with coordinator Ms Priya Mishra and team of teachers demonstrated and taught the students of primary section the art and science of washing one’s hands in eight steps which include, wetting hands with clean and warm running water, applying soap, rubbing palms together, away from the water, then fingers and thumbs and the skin between them, scouring palms with nails and rubbing the back of each hand, rinsing with clean running water and drying hands with a clean towel.

It goes without saying that there may indeed be more than a billion reasons to celebrate Global Handwashing Day. Principal was of the firm opinion that robots who claim to teach handwashing are meant to entertain while it is the teachers who can teach the art and science of it.
