Ireland wants to break the power of the Catholics Church

“Follow Ireland’s Example!”

“Ireland has woken up – but Germany is still sleeping!” With these words, Dieter Potzel, spokesman for the church-critical organization Free Citizens for Democratic Values, commented on the news that Ireland’s government had summoned the Vatican’s ambassador. The chairman of the governing party Fine Gael, Charlie Flanagan, even called for his expulsion.

“The Ireland of the 21st century will no longer defer to Catholic authority!” declared the deeply angered Irish Minister President Enda Kenny. This followed the publication of an investigative report concerning the cover-up of the crimes of child abusers committed by priests in the Diocese of Cloyne. The report concluded that already in the year 1997, the Vatican itself – under the leadership of the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger – had practically annulled the guidelines of the Irish bishops for dealing with cases of abuse. Two thirds of the cases that became known within the church have not been reported to the authorities since then. The Irish Minister for Justice announced that withholding information about such cases will be made a criminal offence in the future.

“Ireland is rebelling,” said Dieter Potzel, “but as yet hardly anyone in Germany dares to take a position against the scandalous fact that the patron of this worldwide system of cover-up of the crimes of child-abusers, Joseph Ratzinger, will cost the German taxpayers millions during his visit to Germany at the end of September and will even be allowed to give a speech in Parliament.” He also stated that only shamefully few politicians have until now announced that, out of protest, they will at least fail to appear for the speech.

“Have we become a nation of scaredy-cats?” asked the former Lutheran pastor. “Anyone who endorses this speech thus strengthens the cover-up system that Ratzinger single-handedly built up over decades – and is thus indirectly playing into the hands of the sexual criminals, who are covered by this cartel of silence. Follow Ireland’s example!” In this connection, Potzel quoted Kurd von Schlözer, the Prussian emissary to the Vatican during the 19th century, who remarked about the naiveté of German politicians towards the Vatican: “The political stupidity of Germans is so enormous that it is incomprehensible.”
