The Explosive Bible – When Will Ratzinger Disassociate Himself?

When the Holy Scriptures are used to justify violence, wanton killing, terrorism and the like, most citizens are quick to condemn such actions, but few stop to question their source. Perhaps we should consider those who glorify the Holy Bible and make differences between believers and unbelievers as dangerous fundamentalists. We might even have to question allowing such fundamentalists as the pope to address parliament and other democratic assemblies that are for all people regardless of religion.

“While all over Europe they’re feverishly searching for connections and contacts of the Norwegian terrorist, the actual root of his ideological delusion is dismissed: the passages in the Bible that glorify violence.” In this connection, Dieter Potzel, spokesman of the church-critical organization Free Citizens for Democratic Values, refers to the report in Spiegel Online on July 25, 2011: “Comparable to a Qaida ideologist, Breivik sought out passages in the Bible that legitimize violence. He said violence is not only allowed, but even necessary.”

“Unfortunately, the assassin is only too right where the Bible is concerned,” stated the Lutheran theologian and former pastor Potzel. This can be read in numerous biblical passages, for instance in Numbers, chapter 31: "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD’s vengeance on Midian. … They warred against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every male. … And the people of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones, and they took as plunder all their cattle, their flocks, and all their goods. All their cities in the places where they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire…”

Officially, the assassin Anders Breivig belonged to the Protestant-Lutheran state church, Potzel continued, but according to the church information service idea (July 24, 2011) he supported “a collective conversion to Catholicism.” And he saw himself as an ecclesiastical “Knight of the Temple,” who should drive out the “unbelievers.” Potzel said, “This fundamental attitude definitely has its roots in the church. And the fatal thing about it is that until today the Vatican Church has not disassociated itself from these roots glorifying violence. On the contrary: In the Catechism edited by Joseph Ratzinger himself, one can literally read: ‘The Old Testament prepares for the New and the New Testament fulfills the Old; the two shed light on each other; both are true Word of God.’ (No. 140) And during past centuries, we have been able to see how, according to the doctrine of countless “infallible” popes, the Old Testament should be fulfilled.”

“From day to day, it is becoming clearer that the decision to allow Joseph Ratzinger to speak in the German Parliament was wrong,” said Potzel. “Fundamentalists are dangerous and do not fit in with our worthy democracy. And if one rightly turns away in disgust from the violent fundamentalist in Oslo, then one should at least not honor the spiritual fundamentalist from Rome with a speech in Parliament.”
