Continuing Professional Development: Reflections on

17 July 2019, Cheyenne, WY — Kenneth P. Drude, Ph.D., Marlene Maheu, Ph.D., and Donald M. Hilty, MD, MBA released an article entitled, “Continuing Professional Development: Reflections on a Lifelong Learning Process.” (https://telehealth.org/blog/continuing-professional-development/)

In June of 2019, the quarterly peer-reviewed medical journal known as Psychiatric Clinics of North America published an article authored by Kenneth P. Drude, PhD., Marlene Maheu, PhD., Donald M. Hilty, MD, MBA. The journal covers psychiatry and patient management. This writing team has been researching and publishing together for several years. In the words of the authors as published:

Continuing professional development (CPD) is the responsibility of practicing health professionals to maintain and enhance their performance and improve health care outcomes. It requires professionals to monitor and reflect on their performance, identify opportunities to improve professional practice gaps, engage in formal and informal learning activities, and make practice changes to reduce or eliminate performance gaps.1 CPD is a lifelong learning process that begins during graduate and postgraduate education and training and continues after obtaining independent licensure. Although initial professional education and training may be structured, as their careers develop, professionals generally have greater discretion in their learning processes. How practicing professionals approach and respond to ethical and legal CPD.

Marlene M. Maheu, Ph.D. is the founder of the Telebehavioral Health Institute. She has written four textbooks in telebehavioral health and is recognized as one of the leading authors and trainers in the U.S. and Canada for telepractice. She is the lead author on the field’s “An Interprofessional Framework for Telebehavioral Health Competencies” for ethical telebehavioral health, telemental health, telepsychiatry, telepsychology, distance counseling, and online therapy. As a world-class leader in the field, she offers practical strategies, straightforward solutions and the hands-on wisdom that only develops through time and focus.

Kenneth Drude, Ph.D. is a psychologist in a general private practice near Dayton, Ohio. He is a member and past president of Ohio Board of Psychology, a past president and finance officer of the Ohio Psychological Association and served on its board for 28 years. Dr. Drude has actively participated in the development of state and national professional telebehavioral health guidelines and competencies and is the author and co-author of multiple psychology and telebehavioral health journal articles.

He speaks internationally and researches models of care, health economics and a variety of technologies (e.g., synchronous and asynchronous telepsychiatry, mobile health and informatics). Dr. Hilty is also active with pedagogy, faculty development and publishing work (e.g., telepsychiatry, telebehavioral health, social media and mobile health competencies). Dr. Hilty serves as Editor of both the Journal of Technology in Behavioral Science and Psychology and Cognitive Science. He is on the APA-IOM and APA-ATA Guideline Writing Groups.
