Flensburg/Germany, 18.04.2011 – An effective Public Early Warning System reduces the impact of a disaster by giving the authorities a means to alert the public and first responders and provide them with critical timely information so that they can best react to the situation.

While Japan is still trying to cope with the disastrous effects of the largest earthquake in their history, the resulting tsunami and the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima, many countries in other parts of the world have started to review their emergency preparedness.

The events in Japan have proven once more that fast, reliable communication and information is absolutely mandatory for a successful strategy to handle catastrophes and emergencies. 2wcom’s Multi Hazard Public Early Warning System is based on the existing FM radio broadcast network which has been proven to be a “life-line” in every aftermath and the most reliable source of a valuable information channel in any crisis or major disasters. We utilize the approved Radio Data System (RDS) protocol to transmit time sensitive alerts within 1 or 2 seconds to our dedicated 2wcom Early Warning Receiver. Other notification technologies like telephone call or SMS based solutions are slow and may even break down under high load of traffic.

Night and day…no matter the status of the Early Warning Receiver - on/off or in wake-up mode - an alert sound wakes up everybody, a running text on the display informs about the situation, followed by a voice messages on how to behave best and what to do during an emergency situation. Emergency managers can use this solution as well to forward messages to first responders for specific instructions up-front.

Even in power loss situations an integrated battery back-up keeps the Early Warning Receiver operational for 60 hours. The radio stations itself are usually equipped with back-up diesel generators for emergency power supply. The data feed to FM transmitter stations can be realized via landline, radio link systems or via satellite providing additional means of redundancy.

The 2wcom Emergency Warning Solution has already been approved worldwide. At the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (former RäddningsVerket) for instance the technology has been well proven over years and so 47,000 Early Warning Receivers have been working since 2002 – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, 100% availability – cost effective, available and immediately deployable.
