Greenspring Performing Arts Group Offers Scholarships to Students at George Mason University

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA – The Greenspring Players, a performing arts resident group at Greenspring retirement community, is using performance proceeds to provide scholarships to students at George Mason University (GMU) who have shown a commitment to the arts. To be considered, applicants must be a rising junior or senior and must be studying to be a performer, director, designer, or to serve a technical support function. Due to a donation last year, the group was able to provide three scholarships to GMU students Tom Prescott, April Brazzard, and Patricia Talmadge.

This year, the funds for two $1500 scholarships will come from performances in May of “The Sounds of Broadway,” featuring excerpts from "Guys and Dolls" and "My Fair Lady" as well as performances in October of Ayn Rand’s “Night of January 16th”. “We have a plethora of talent at Greenspring,” said Fran Duvall, chair of the Greenspring Players and producer of this years’ production.

There are 37 actors in next month’s musical production in addition to the dozens of residents on the production team of directors, costume designers, set builders, and many more. Only four actors in the “Sounds of Broadway” production are not residents of Greenspring; one of those actors is two-time scholarship winner, Patricia Talmadge, who will be performing the leading role of Eliza Doolittle. “I love mingling with the Greenspring residents,” said Talmadge. “I admire the fact that they still aspire to have full and interesting lives.”

For the past four years, the Greenspring Players have given scholarships to theater majors at GMU. At present time, these awards are the only scholarships offered by an outside organization to theater students at the university. The deadline to apply for one of the scholarships is June 3.
