Greenspring Resident Wins Gold at 2011 National Senior Games

Press release from: Erickson Living

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA - Jack Cason, 78, left the 2011 National Senior Games held in Houston, Texas and returned to his home at Greenspring retirement community in Springfield, Va. with a gold medal in hand. Earning a score of 1706/1800 points in the all compound release archery competition, he received the highest score among all males aged 74-79.

Cason, a Florida native, initially picked up archery as a hobby. He started competing when he first qualified for the National Senior Games in 2005, which were hosted in Pittsburgh, Pa. He returned from the 2005 games with a bronze medal. After missing the 2007 games, Cason returned to the National Senior Games in 2009 to compete in San Francisco, where he earned a silver medal with a score of 1699/1800 points. He has competed in several state-wide games as well, earning several awards from the Virginia Field Archery Association and the Florida Archery Association.

Cason enjoys all aspects of archery including the physical nature of the sport and the mental stimulation that it demands. “Archery gives you exercise walking back and forth to the targets and it challenges you mentally,” said Cason.

In 2010, Cason moved to Greenspring and shortly thereafter initiated the first resident archery club at the community. The club now has about six members who practice every Monday morning at Ft. Belvoir Army Base located just a few miles away from Greenspring.

Cason plans to compete in the 2013 National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio and notes that he will be competing in a different age bracket at that point. “Unfortunately, as your age gets higher, your scores get lower,” Cason lamented. Nonetheless, he is aiming to beat his 2011 score and take home another gold.
