Greenspring Receives 2013 Excellence in the Workplace Award from LeadingAge

(Springfield, Va.) – Greenspring, an Erickson Living retirement community in Springfield, Va., has been recognized by LeadingAge with the 2013 Excellence in the Workplace Award. According to LeadingAge, the award “recognizes organizations that demonstrate effectiveness in fostering and advancing a healthy workplace culture and an environment that promotes the recruitment, retention, and development of staff at all levels of the organization.” The award will be presented to Greenspring later this year at the 2013 LeadingAge Annual Meeting and Expo in Dallas, Texas.

“It is a special honor for Greenspring to receive this commendation from LeadingAge,” said Robin Gliboff, Greenspring’s Executive Director. “Greenspring’s staff is comprised of talented, dedicated individuals who are encouraged to discover their potential and are provided with a variety of tools and opportunities to help them reach their goals.”

Greenspring received the 2013 Excellence in the Workplace Award in recognition of the significant opportunities available to staff at the community. These opportunities include web-based (online) training, peer-to-peer informal and formal on the job training, external and internal development opportunities, tuition reimbursement, the Growing Associates in Nursing (GAIN) program, and an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, among others.

“At Greenspring, employee development is a critical part of what makes our community successful,” said Tamika Mitchell, Greenspring’s Director of Human Resources. “We offer innovative programs that foster both professional engagement and employee growth. Our employees also understand their own work priorities and how these priorities support the organization’s mission and values.”

Greenspring is dedicated to attracting and retaining highly knowledgeable staff who demonstrate values consistent with those of the community and Erickson Living. Greenspring has retained more than 90% of the community’s nearly 1000 staff members to date this year, and almost half of those have worked at Greenspring for five or more years. Employees at the community benefit greatly from the widespread opportunities for training and development both internally and externally; in 2012 alone, over 13,000 training hours were completed by Greenspring staff. These opportunities provide staff members with the tools to further their careers, change career paths, or pursue development in their current position.

Some of the training and development opportunities that staff may participate in at Greenspring include tuition assistance for both full and part-time employees and the GAIN program, which includes Greenspring-paid tuition for those interested in pursuing nursing careers through accredited nursing programs. Greenspring also covers 100% of CPR certification costs for staff. At the community, staff may also participate in a resident-run ESL program aimed to employees further develop their English language skills. Due in part to these opportunities, there were more than 60 promotions within the community from 2012 to 2013.
