Press release from: Erickson Living

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA (September 26, 2011) – Fittingly, just days after Patriot Day and National POW/MIA Recognition Day, Greenspring Post 123 was named a permanent charter of the American Legion in a ceremony on September 20. Greenspring received a provisional charter last year when resident Curtis Ross recruited 15 members of the community to join the Post. Today, Greenspring Post 123 has 44 members and hopes to continue adding members to the American Legion, the largest veteran’s service organization in the nation.

Greenspring Post 123, part of the American Legion’s 17th district, was granted permanent status by the Membership Chairman for the Department of Virginia, Linden Dixon. Also present at the ceremony was current 17th district Commander, Ed Dockery, former 17th district Commander, Ray Lockett, the Virginia American Legion Department Public Relations Committee Chairman, Marv Rodney, Post 123 Commander, Curtis Ross, Post 123 Vice-Commander, Robert Willis, and Post 123 Adjutant and Acting Treasurer, Libby Haynes.

Haynes joined Post 44, the Unknown Soldier Post of Arlington, Va. in 1992. She served over three years as Post 44’s Commander prior to moving to Greenspring and transferring to Post 123. “We continue to recruit new members and to develop more programs,” said Haynes. “Receiving the permanent charter gives us a sense of having accomplished something important, with the hope that our Post will be available to all wartime veterans at Greenspring and continue as such into the future.”

Rodney stressed the importance of this historic event at Greenspring and reminded the assembled Legionnaires that receipt of their permanent charter was a “once in a lifetime event that will forever bear the signatures of the original members.”
