Jesse Slome, Long-Term Care Insurance Expert

The cost of long-term care insurance can vary by as much as 40 percent for virtually identical coverage according to a talk delivered today by Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance.

Slome was addressing a group of consumers attending an educational workshop today in Los Angeles. The focus of his talk was what to look at when considering long-term care insurance protection.

"Each company sets their own prices and acceptable health standards," Slome explained to the group of men and women, most of whom were in their 50s and early 60s. "That's why it is extremely important to do some comparison shopping yourself or to work with an insurance professional who compares insurers on your behalf." He noted that virtually identical policies from companies such as Northwestern Mutual could cost significantly more than those from leading insurers such as John Hancock, Prudential or Mutual of Omaha.

The head of the trade organization which advocates planning but does not sell insurance, suggested individuals start planning while in their 50s. "People do not understand one must health qualify for this insurance protection," Slome explained. "As you age, it becomes harder to meet the health standards and many people wait until it is too late to qualify."

Slome who is author of the book, Consumer's Guide to Long-Term Care Insurance stressed that many people are not aware of discounts that can significantly reduce the cost of coverage. He explained to the luncheon crowd that taking advantage of simple savings could reduce the cost by 20 to 60 percent each year.

The American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (www.aaltci.org) is a national trade organization headquartered in Los Angeles, CA.

Jesse Slome is a leading expert in the fields of long term care and critical illness insurance. He is founder and executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Association http://www.aaltci.org/ and the American Association for Critical Illness Insurance http://www.criticalillnessinsuranceinfo.org/the industry trade organizations.
