First Indian Recipient American Academy of Optometry Diplomate Proud to be BITSian Jameel Rizwana Hussaindeen

She is an alumnus of world renowned Chennai Based Medical Research Foundation Sankara Nethralaya Elite School of Optometry ESO Birla Institute of Technology and Science – BITS Pilani collaborative BS Optometry (2000 – 2004), MPhil Optometry (2007 – 2009) and PhD program which had set the benchmark in Optometry education for over two decades in India yesterday.

Dr Jameel Rizwana Hussaindeen heads the Binocular Vision / Vision Therapy clinic at Sankara Nethralaya Medical Research Foundation and is Passionate about Optometry and proud to be a primary eye care professional. Her career goal is to excel in areas of Optometry research, Clinical care and teaching. Her focus area is Binocular vision and her Specialties include Pediatric Optometry.

She is also the research coordinator for the Sankara Nethralaya Srimathi Sundari Subramanian department of Visual psychophysics, the vision science research wing that runs various collaborative research projects and graduate research projects. She is the course director of binocular vision fellowship and residency programs conducted by the Sankara Nethralaya Academy. Dr. Hussaindeen has many peer reviewed publications in international journals and also has authored chapters in books. She travels around the country to deliver lectures and to train Optometrists in Binocular vision. She is a renowned Optometrist and receives referrals from across the country for managing patients with amblyopia and binocular vision anomalies.

She is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and the first Indian to receive a fellowship from the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD), USA. She is the recipient of Indo-US science and technology forum's (IUSSTF) scholarship for the year 2013 and also the Australian government's Endeavour-executive fellowship for 2016. Recently she has been appointed as the Australia awards ambassador by the Australian high commission.

She had enrolled into the Diplomate process in 2015 and carried out submission of 5 case reports (in amblyopia, strabismus - exotropia and esotropia, learning disability, brain injury), a written exam , clinical skills assessment ( in areas of strabismus, pediatric Optometry work-up, vision therapy, visual perceptual testing for learning disability, and binocular vision assessment), and finally the tough Oral exam.

She was guided by Dr. Mitchell Scheiman (Dean of Salisbury University, Pennsylvania, USA) who was a tremendous source of support and inspiration throughout her journey. She cleared all the 4 phases, and was the first Indian to be declared as the Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry in the specialty of Binocular Vision, Perception, and Pediatric Optometry - BVPPO at 2.15 pm Central time in San Antonio, Texas USA, on the 8th Nov, 2018.

On receiving the diplomate, Dr Jameel Rizwana Hussaindeep expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the faculty of the Sankara Nethralaya BITS Pilani collaborative program for making her dream come true and resolved to provide best quality healthcare in her speciality to the world at large.
