Mobile phone users almost doubled during the last two years

According to Dataxis Intelligence last updates, Senegal one of west African most dynamic mobile communications market, has closed 2009 with more than 6.9 million SIM cards users, which represents an uptake of 28% compared to 2008 level (see chart below). More interesting to notice is the fact that the country’s mobile market has been experiencing a substantial growth since 2007 leading the number of subscribers to nearly double up from 3.6 million in just two years.

As far as the market structure is concerned, apart from Orange Senegal (Sonatel Group) and Tigo Senegal (Millicom International), a newcomer owned by the Expresso Telecom Group has entered the market in 2009 operating under the same brand.

As at the end of 2009, the market leader remained Orange Senegal with 67% of the total mobile phone users resorting to its services, followed far behind by Tigo which claims a 30% market share, while the last entrant Expresso has managed to grab 3% of the pie within a year of operations roll-out.
