Global leaders from Elisa, Softbank, TIM, BT and MTS come together to share network evolution developments
Rome, Italy. 04 September 2018 - With Europe taking a slating over delays to driving 5G forward, many of the region's leading operators are taking matters into their own hands and ensuring they have the technologies and expertise in place for when barriers are lifted. In comparison to their North America and Asian counterparts in particular, developments in Europe have been somewhat stifled, with legacy networks, regulation and spectrum availability an added complication.
However, progress is being made to ensure technologies that mitigate these problems are ready to be deployed, with many of the major operators beyond trial phase and ready to roll out. Many of these have been collaborative processes that bring together academic, vendor and alliance expertise.
TIM is one such operator who has been working with regional academia and OEMs to trial technologies essential to the success of 5G.
Recently appointed TIM Chief Technology Officer, Elisabetta Romano will outline her vision for the operator's roll out of technological innovation, evolution of the networks, and for the Information Technology required to support TIM's digitisation process. One of Romano's priorities at TIM is bringing 5G to mobile services, with a variety of applications already trialled. Speaking ahead of the RAN World global meeting, Romano says "I look forward to supporting the next chapter of TIM's development as we enable local businesses and new industries to benefit from all that 5G can bring. Our field trials in several cities have allowed us to collect significant insights on the technological capabilities and start engaging the ecosystem of verticals around these innovative capabilities".
Also speaking at RAN World will be the CTO of Elisa, Kalle Lehtinen, as the operator announces it has launched Europe's first commercial 5G network. The Finnish operator has taken a novel approach to network automation, making it an attractive partner for operators searching for a network upgrade.
Lehtinen says "we are pleased to participate in this meeting once again. Together with our global peers, we continually seek to discuss and broaden our perspective for future technology strategies and improvements of the RAN."
The two-day meeting in Rome will also feature presentations and panels from the likes of Softbank's Director of Advanced Technology Development, Takato Ando; AT&T's Director of RAN Engineering, Sinan Akkaya; BT's Principal Network Architect Andy Sutton and Technology Strategy & Innovation Director at Proximus, Matteo Gatta.
As one of the hottest topics on the agenda this year, Massive MIMO will be covered on the agenda by German trailblazers Deutsche Telekom, as well as Russia's MTS, having debuted the technology during the FIFA World Cup.
Following its successful launch at the international tournament this month, MTS' Head of Network Development, Olga Ramina says "this technology will be central in enabling our 5G plans across Russia. At MTS we are investing in our network capabilities, deploying a range of technologies that will support both our current needs and our plans for the future".
The two day event is being hosted in Rome with the support of operator partner TIM, and combines a range of presentations, discussions and working groups with networking functions and drinks receptions. As well as the pioneering operators speaking, sponsors including JMA Wireless and NEC Europe will be demonstrating the latest approaches in collaborative RAN development.
Georgie Mailer-Howat, Head of Content at event organisers Avren Events, comments "we're really excited to see new sponsors such as JMA and NEC join RAN World alongside some of the world's leading technology providers. This year's agenda reads like a "Who's Who" of excellence and innovations from operators and academia not just from Europe but Asia and the USA as well, and I'm looking forward to two days of discussion, idea sharing and new partnerships.
Many of our returning sponsors have gone into business with new contacts made at the event, and at such an important and exciting time for 5G and network developments events like this really help to share new ideas and move the market forward".
RAN World takes place at the Sheraton de' Medici in Rome, Italy, on 9-10 October. For more information, and for your last chance to register, visit the RAN World website here.

Monaco, Macao, Pau. Star-studded, glamorous and technically demanding – street circuits hold a special fascination for the motor racing world. But that wasn’t going to stop Tim Sandtler doing…
